PA judge sentenced, admits corruption
This judge ruined so many young lives. Disgusting.

Quote:http://www.timesleader.com/news/_lsquo_I...-2011.html

Conahan, 59, was sentenced Friday to 17 and a half years in prison and ordered to pay $894,167 in restitution and fines for his guilty plea to one count of racketeering conspiracy. He voluntarily surrendered and was taken into custody immediately after the hearing.

Neither he nor the several dozen family members and friends who appeared in court with him showed any emotion as U.S. District Judge Edwin Kosik imposed the sentence.

*snip*

The government had agreed that penalty was sufficient punishment for the former Luzerne County judges, whom they alleged took $2.8 million in kickbacks for closing down the county’s juvenile center, paving the way for the PA Child Care and Western PA Child Care centers that were co-owned by attorney Robert Powell and built by Robert Mericle.

Kosik rejected that plea agreement, in part, because he felt Conahan and Ciavarella had failed to demonstrate they had accepted responsibility for their crimes.

Wow! That's quite a story.

"SCRANTON – He came from a family where success was defined by money and the ends justified the means."

This sounds like the republiCON party and especially the gov of Pennsylvania right now..Tom Corbett trying to rig the 2012 election so there's no way President Obama will win.

There is quite an unholy mess going on in PA. Since it's my old home state I hope they can get things figured out. I'd hate to see that state end up as bad as AZ.

My son was born in Philly..we were on vacay there in '67 visiting relatives of my husband's. We came all the way from California and that 9 hour drive from D.C. to Philly when it's only 3..drove me into labor! Bounce

The Liberty Bell is there for cryin' out loud!

Where were you from, azmouse?

Wow. Sounds like an adventure in labor and delivery. I'm glad everything turned out well for you and your son. Smile

I was born in Reading, PA and lived near a little armpit of a place called Boyertown. I was glad to leave it for the big city.

From what I've read, the sentence is well-deserved.

Yes it was. I hope other judges that may have been tempted by the money see this case and don't repeat the mistakes.

Only 17 1/2 years for screwing over all those kids, he got off easy. I wonder if they can sue him in civil court?

Privatize govermental functions, and this is the result. Corruption.

Private enterprises should NEVER be allowed to part of the criminal justice system, it will then purchase politicans to make *everything* illegal, and judges to implement those laws, filing their jails for profit.

The county and state both need to be sued for allowing this to happen; where was the oversight?

This is what make this case so frightening. Money will corrupt the system and the judges, as is seen with this story, are only human and can be bought. The system is already rigged against the little guy, this makes it even worse.
