Yesterday's election did not go well.

It was the kind of night where terms like "senseless", "to a pulp", and "redheaded stepchild" would be appropriate.

Turnout was only about 5%. The only people voting were cranky, bitchy old French-Canadians, dim-bulb patronage hires, and people who think traveling to Nashua is a exotic excursion. A toxic mix.

Of course, I am in a severely foul mood.

The Teamsters can kiss my ass. As an alderman, I was the only one on the board to fight to save the jobs of their members who work at the library. Naturally, they gave money to their right wing drinking buddy

The city Dem chairman can kiss my ass. He wouldn't have me on his cable show, but he brought on the incumbent, who endorsed John McCain and Ovide Lamontagne, and pumped his tires for a full hour, making him sound like the second coming of FDR

Prospective gubernatorial candidates Steve Marchand and Maggie Hassan can kiss my ass. I helped Steve on his first race for Portsmouth city council, and one of Maggie's first lawn sign locations was in my parent's yard. They wouldn't give me $25 because they didn't want to offend the pseudo-Dem who is backing the Republlican frontrunner.

The electoral process can kiss my ass. I've busted my ass working for Democratic candidates and causes since 1984. I've paid my dues over and over, and seen plenty of Shiny New Things pass me in the pecking order, but kept working. Well, forget it.

I'm done. Let someone else deal with the grief, the expense, the emotional toll of being the "principled good guy who fights for what he believes in" but gets shived by the political class as soon as it is in their interest.

I'm going off the political grid for a while. This was the last straw in so many ways. It is time to move on.

It's a maddening reality that, so often the people who really belong in politics working for the people, don't make it...and the last people who should be in politics get entrenched and impossible to get out.

RE: TTFN
Sorry Peadar... Take a couple days off and regroup and then think about your next step. I don't blame you about the getting out of politics thing... As the years go by I like politics less and less... Maybe it's the frustrati or the obstructionist Republicans or both...

Principles alone do not put food on the table.
