RE: Pub winning Weiner's district
Yeah, but it's a safe Democratic district.

RE: Pub winning Weiner's district
It's still a Democratic District in NY, but the Dems ASSumed any Democrat would win and the Republican opponent took advantage of a perceived anti-Israel bias by Obama - this in a highly Jewish district. Democrats blew this election big time. You know they blew it because they tried to dump money in at the last minute once they realized they were losing this race. That's pretty pathetic that they just took this race for granted - especially in this political climate. Hopefully they can win this back in 14 months.

RE: Pub winning Weiner's district
There's so much behind this..that you have to dig a little to see why this happened.
"* With Dems likely to lose Anthony Weiner’s seat tonight, Politico’s Glenn Thrush counters the GOP interpretation:
Not to dismiss the NY special: But any race that includes David Weprin — for a seat that will soon disappear — is a bellwether of nuthin’
I don't know who Glenn Thrush is but this was on The Happy Hour Roundup..
I also don't know what he means by the "seat soon disappearing".

BYE BYE Weiner; Hello Nutbag: Same-Sex Marriage Effect on NY-9 Special Election [Updated!]
"Republican nutbags in Weiner’s district may pull off a reverse Hochul. Why? Because of Democrats’ failure to understand that the NY-9 race is very different from the NY-26 race, in which Kathy Hochul upset Jane Corwin by making the election a referendum on Medicare and Paul “Baby Blue Eyes” Ryan’s attempt to figuratively murder your grandma by turning Medicare into a voucher program.
Everybody loves Medicare. Not everybody loves same-sex marriage, and the NY-9 race has become a referendum on same-sex marriage, as evidenced by Democratic State Senator Ruben Diaz’s robo-call efforts slamming Democratic candidate Weprin for his pro-same sex marriage stance:"

And, this that I posted elsewhere yesterday..
NY GOP Supporters of Bob Turner Send Out Islamophobic Mailer to Registered Voters in NY-9
http://www.angryblacklady.com/2011/09/12...s-in-ny-9/
Course, the corporatemedia/gop will say this is the absolute referendum on President Obama. Also the Nevada 2nd District is a gop win and has been since it was drawn in 1980.
Oh yes, I should mention NY District 9 has a high Orthodox Jewish population and evidently they aren't as happy with PBO's stance on Israel whereas Bob Turner will make them so happy. They'll be sorry.

New York is losing 2 congressional districts. NY-9 is one of them that is going to disappear.
This is the primary reason no high value Democrats even wanted to try to claim the seat and the reason very little in the way of resources was pumped into the race.
As others have said, this is a sideshow. The media will use it to fill time for awhile, but it means very little in the grand scheme of things.

Can we thank the media for not pointing out the obvious? This is really annoying.

RE: Pub winning Weiner's district
There is no question Obama's popularity (or lack thereof) hurt the Dem candidate in this district. It's a very conservative Orthodox Jewish district and those Jews tend to be more anti-Obama than the mainstream of their religion. Even though Obama won NY in '08 by the highest margin of any Dem candidate since '64, he underperformed in this district compared to Kerry four years earlier.
This was all about Obama's stance on Israel and their distrust of him and less on any other policy he's produced or supported as president. There is a reason they played up the mosque at the WTC - they're going hard at the conservative Jews who don't like Muslims and any association with that faith, specifically in direct result of Israel.

RE: Pub winning Weiner's district
The media! Pshaw. They are dancing around the burning cross with glee.
This is the list of articles on WaPo about the election in their morning email:
Republican wins Democratic House seat in N.Y.
Paul Kane
President Obama suffered a sharp rebuke when voters in New York elected a conservative Republican to represent a Democratic congressional district that has not been in GOP hands since the 1920s.
The Fix: Will Democrats panic?
Result will buoy GOP's hopes for 2012
Republican wins Nevada House special election
Special election gauges Obama's strength
And there are more attached to each article....it's where I found the video.

RoyG, I thought the same thing and looked it up this morning.
The media never truly grasps that politics really is all local. Because that doesn't make for a good story.

OK, now, that district isn't as Orthodox Jewish as...
many think. Fresh Meadows and Gerritsen Beach are reform Jewish, Flushing is Asian, Howard Beach is Italian, far Rockaway is Irish... and so it goes. And, yes, you can generalize about many neighborhoods. although things are always in a state of change. Ultra-orthodox do tend to vote the way the rabbis tell them, though, and had some effect.
And, aside from Weiner, who was very popular in the district, other elections there tended to be closer than normal for NYC.
I used to live in Flushing (when it was still largely Jewish), and spent a lot of time all over Brooklyn and Queens. NYC neighborhoods are difficult to fully understand unless you've spent the time there, or another city with similar ethnic enclaves. It's also difficult to understand how highly emotional some people get in these neighborhoods.
Ed Koch, proving for once and all that he has completely lost it, basing his endorsement on "teaching Obama a lesson on Israel" probably had less to do with the election than it had to do with what's left of his ego.
The last minute Muslim bashing by Turner probably had the most effect. With all the 9-11 hysteria around, don't let it be known you're sympathetic toward Muslims if you want to win an election-- and you better believe it's not just Jews who are receptive to that line. About even with that excuse is Weprin just being a wimpy throwaway candidate who would have had a hard time winning against anyone.
Under the circumstances, 48% isn't really that bad (but it's still a loss).

Meanwhile,PBO showed "leadership of historic dimensions" to save Israelis in Cairo
embassy
Quote:“We’ve been talking these days about Turkey and about Egypt. And I would like to say something about the event which took place last Friday evening or through the night in Cairo, which I think to a large extent was a seminal event, not only in the history of the Middle East but also in the history of the relations between Israel and Egypt, and between Israel and the United States of America.
During that night, as you know, our embassy was surrounded and was on the verge of being stormed. And the Prime Minister went to the special command center in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and from there he actually ran and commanded this operation of trying to extricate our staff from the embassy. And, at the end, there were six people left, six people of the security detail of the embassy. They were there inside the last room, which had been the ultimate room in the embassy. And, they had one steel door, which was between them and the mob.
Quote:But one of the decisions he had to take in the end, he wanted to take, was to find ways of extricating his people, our people, out of that embassy. And he turned to one man, to the President of the United States, and he spoke to him. And the president of the United States, without having much time to consult with Congress, and with the media, and with the analysts and with all of the other people who have to be consulted on major and grave decisions. He took a decision to take up the telephone and get on the line with the powers that be in Egypt, and get them to order the release of these six people, and the detail of the Egyptian commando forces entered and saved them.
