Fighters attack Gadhafi stronghold, commander says
From Ben Wedeman

Near Bani Walid, Libya (CNN) -- Fighters were given the go ahead to attack one of Moammar Gadhafi's last bastions of support after a deadline for the town to surrender passed without an apparent deal, a military commander told CNN Saturday.

Gadhafi loyalists clashed with opposition forces overnight in Bani Walid, where fighters believe key members of the ousted Libyan leader's regime -- including two of Gadhafi's sons -- may be hiding.

Meanwhile, an interim government is to be established within 30 days of the declaration of liberation, U.N. envoy Martin said. Until then, the NTC is assuming "caretaker responsibilities" to carry out urgently needed functions, he added.

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has proposed a support mission for three months, after which "we would then go back to the Security Council for a longer mandate," Martin said.

Interpol adds Gaddafi to most wanted list
Police organisation issues "red notices" for former Libyan leader, his son and spy chief, as new convoy reaches Niger.
September 9, 2011

The France-based international police organisation said it had issued the notice in collaboration with Luis Moreno-Ocampo, the chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC) where Gaddafi is accused of crimes against humanity.

Notices were also issued for Gaddafi's son, Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, and Abdullah Senussi, his former director of military intelligence, who have also been indicted by the ICC.

Interpol said the issue of the notices was also the first step towards its formally recognising Libya's National Transitional Council [NTC] as the country's formal government.

Moreno-Ocampo said the issuing of the alert meant that Gaddafi's arrest was a "matter of time" and ensured that the warrant for his arrest was in the hands of law enforcement agencies around the world.
