Allowing for the decline from the Verizon strike, private payrolls rose by 62,000
Since the press won't do it's job, I'm writing my own headline and parsing the article accordingly...
______________________________________________

... the jobless rate held steady at 9.1 percent in August. The unemployment rate is derived from a separate survey of households, which showed an increase in employment and a tick up in the labor force participation rate.

...the hiring slowdown probably will not be seen as a recession signal as layoffs are not rising that much.

A strike by about 45,000 Verizon Communications workers helped push employment in the information services down by 48,000. Allowing for the decline from the Verizon strike, private payrolls would have risen by 62,000. [which, coincidentally, is about the same number as June - not good but not as grim as you may be lead to believe by the press.]

...

An acrimonious political fight over U.S. debt, which culminated in the downgrade of the country's AAA credit rating from Standard & Poor's, and a worsening debt crisis in Europe ignited a massive stock market sell-off last month and sent business and consumer confidence tumbling

...

The steady jobless claims, relatively strong consumer spending, continued demand for manufactured goods and increases in industrial production suggest the economy will steer clear of recession.

So, considering the acrimony caused by the Republicans, the Verizon strike and the fact that unemployment stayed steady in spite of an increase in the labor force participation rate, I don't see this as all that bad a report.

Confirmed, Fox "news" makes you stupid

The ones you are noticing are more terrified than anything else. They are lashing out because they are comfortable; and to acknowledge what is happening is a threat to that comfort. Ignore them, for they are not the voices that will rise in the coming days, months and years. They are not the voices of our collected humanity. They are the old voices of fear and impotence. - Anonymous

I didn't see it as that bad either. Zero isn't in the red. Next month we will see the loss of jobs from the hurricane....and then jobs to rebuild will bring it up.

Oh yeah.. the truth will dribble out.. but a lot of people will have moved on to the next scary thing.. we are carrying our brains in our pockets anymore, and the ability to reason something out seems to be losing ground

Thoughtful responses are the first victims of partisan passions.
