Ex-Giffords challenger puts '12 campaign on hiatus
by Dan Nowicki
Aug. 21, 2011 http://www.azcentral.com/arizonarepublic...wicki.html -snip- After his 4,156-vote loss in 2010, Kelly was poised to seek a rematch and late last year even filed to run again, his spokesman John Ellinwood said. But after Giffords, D-Ariz., was wounded in a Jan. 8 assassination attempt, Kelly suspended his nascent campaign. Although he has kept his Federal Election Commission paperwork up to date and still identifies himself on his Facebook page as a "candidate for Arizona's 8th Congressional District," Kelly has not done any fundraising this year. -snip- The Arizona Independent Redistricting Commission is in the process of redrawing the state's political map, so the 2012 congressional district boundaries are not yet known. Antenori said he and Kelly live far enough away from each other that they conceivably could wind up in different districts. Giffords could find herself in a different district, too, he said. -snip- - Anthony Prowell, 48, a Tucson elementary-school teacher, has entered the race in Giffords' district as a Democrat. But the political unknown, who actually is registered as an independent, said he already is looking to switch parties because of what he characterized as a frustrating lack of cooperation from Democrats. "I can't even get anybody at the state or local office to even talk to me," Prowell said. "I get the big brush-off. . . . I'm persona non grata." (because "Arizona Democrats support Giffords." so, he is considering running as a Green Party candidate.) -snip- - Antenori cited the Pima Community College job recently accepted by C.J. Karamargin, Giffords' communications director, as an indicator that Giffords might not seek re-election. Karamargin, whose last day on Giffords' staff was Friday, disputed that conclusion. "People can attempt to explain their ambition any way they choose, but as far as the congresswoman is concerned, she will be making up her own mind," Karamargin said. He added: "If you think you've heard the last of her, you're mistaken." ### |
