Michael Steele Acknowledges GOP Had "Southern Strategy" For Decades
http://theplumline.whorunsgov.com/republ...r-decades/

Quote:A lot of people are pointing to a new set of remarks Michael Steele made about the Republican Party and race, in which Steele acknowledged that the GOP hasn’t given African Americans a reason to support the party.

But I think folks are missing the real news in what Steele said. The RNC chairman also appeared to acknowledge that the GOP has had a race-based “southern strategy” for four decades, which is decidedly not a historical interpretation many Republicans agree with.

Steele made his remarks at DePaul University on Tuesday night. He acknowledged that “we haven’t done a very good job” of giving African Americans a reason to vote Republican. That’s actually unremarkable. But here’s what he also said:

“We have lost sight of the historic, integral link between the party and African-Americans,” Steele said. “This party was co-founded by blacks, among them Frederick Douglass. The Republican Party had a hand in forming the NAACP, and yet we have mistreated that relationship. People don’t walk away from parties. Their parties walk away from them.

“For the last 40-plus years we had a ‘Southern Strategy’ that alienated many minority voters by focusing on the white male vote in the South. Well, guess what happened in 1992, folks, ‘Bubba’ went back home to the Democratic Party and voted for Bill Clinton.”

...

The article is short, but not short enough to post the whole thing here.

This came from the former head of the RNC, so I don't doubt its truthfulness. Don't let them fool you, the repubs KNOW what they are doing, and they should be ashamed. Nono

I didn't think that was even up for debate, but at least he admits it.

I was shocked that he said it out loud. I thought that the repubs rules about racism was like the 1st rule of Fight Club.

RE: Michael Steele Acknowledges GOP Had "Southern Strategy" For Decades
HAD a southern strategy? They still have a southern strategy. They just tried to conceal it behind their black party chair in the last election.

Our local RNC sent horribly racist post cards in 2008. They didn't place a return address, but there was a well organized effort to play to racism.

I posted the specifics at DU a while back.

Quote:Two racist postcards were mailed to our home, addressed to "Hardcore Liberal Democrat."

They were both different however one read:

"Dear Barack Obama Supporter,

Thank you for supporting Barack Obama for President of the United States. Being a good liberal Democrat, like you are, I'm sure you wouldn't mind accepting numerous low and no income Obama constituents as your new neighbors. You may suffer a decrease in your property value, and a rise in your property and theft insurance, but it will be worth it to advance integration."

The mailer is in post card format and has mug shots of local black criminals who have been charged with various crimes. As well as OJ Simpson and Tim Montgomery.

Above the mug shots the text reads:

"Welcome your new neighbors, guilty on all twelve charges."

Signed - "YOUR BELOVED OJ SIMPSON"

IMHO, Steel needs to admit that his party HAS a southern strategy. And, he needs to renounce it.

Knowing Michael Steele went to work for them anyway. No sympathy for him,his willful ignorance and
his greed.
