Conservative ‘marriage pledge’ group apologizes for slavery reference
A socially conservative group has apologized for including a passage about slavery in a pledge it asked the Republican candidates to sign as a prerequisite for the group’s endorsement in the presidential race.

Rep. Michele Bachmann had been the first GOP hopeful to sign “The Marriage Vow,” which included in the introduction a section that lamented that “the Institution of Marriage in America is in great crisis.”

One piece of evidence it offered was the claim that a black person born into slavery “was more likely to be raised by his mother and father in a two-parent household than was an African-American baby born after the election of the USA’s first African-American president.”

<..> “After careful deliberation and wise insight and input from valued colleagues we deeply respect, we agree that the statement referencing children born into slavery can be misconstrued,” said Julie Summa, a spokeswoman for the Family Leader. “We sincerely apologize for any negative feelings this has caused, and have removed the language from the vow.”

Too late!! It was out there and it was signed by the bigots.

And what is this mania about pledges with the teabaggers? There are several of them out there, all pledging to take away the rights of the people. Do these fanatics think they are going to get rewarded for being bigots?

This is from Bachmann signing the pledge......

<..> “I’m running for the presidency of the United States,” she said when asked recently. “I am not running to be anyone’s judge.”

Her decision to sign the pledge Thursday, however, suggests that her concerns about homosexuality do extend beyond simply opposing the right of same-sex couples to marry. She and her husband, Marcus Bachmann, made such views a centerpiece of their earlier careers, prompting the gay rights group Human Rights Campaign to launch a petition of its own Friday.

“We’re calling on all of the Republican presidential candidates to speak out against the Bachmanns’ dangerous views and activities before more damage is done,” the group’s Web site states.

<..> Of the 2012 GOP presidential candidates, the only other one to have signed the pledge is Sen. Rick Santorum (R-Pa.). A spokesman for Tim Pawlenty said the former Minnesota governor is reviewing it. A spokeswoman for former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

edit to add the pledge: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/hp/...GE-VOW.pdf
and it still has the slavery crap on there.

 Slavery had a disastrous impact on African-American families, yet sadly a child born into slavery in 1860
was more likely to be raised by his mother and father in a two-parent household than was an African-American baby born after the election of the USA‟s first African-American President.3

But Bachmann signed it anyway
How can a reference like that not jump out at an enlightened person? Wait, never mind.

Unbelievable. That group pledge makes it sound like Obama is personally responsible for the lack of marriage among certain groups of Americans.

They are only sorry that people actually paid attention to it and called them on it. They meant exactly what they put in that document.

We need to make Bachman and Santorum pay by reminding everyone they supported what was written.

So damn desperate to try to slam Obama at every turn that they don't care how stupid and absolutely DERANGED they look in the process.

The fact that being born into a two-parent household doesn't mean isht when all three (mom, dad and baby) are considered property and able to separated, sold, beaten and killed at will doesn't even factor into these idiots' minds. God, I hate these people.

It wasn't an accident
it was indicative of the group's underlying racism.

RE: Conservative ‘marriage pledge’ group apologizes for slavery reference
It's bad enough that the statement is based on racism, talking about traditional marriage when slaves weren't permitted official marriage.

But it's not even based on any factual evidence about slave households, just their conjecture.

The US Census collected slave schedules, but they don't list names of slaves, just Male 25, Female 22, Male 65, Female 62, Male 6, Male 5.

So, their statement is based on racism and some undocumented fantasy about "the way it was".
