Two months ago, the Democrat, Kathy Hochul, was considered an all-but-certain loser in the race against Jane Corwin. But Ms. Hochul seized on her Republican rival’s embrace of the proposal from Representative Paul D. Ryan, Republican of Wisconsin, to overhaul Medicare, and she never let up.

Voters, who turned out in strikingly large numbers for a special election, said they trusted Ms. Hochul, the county clerk of Erie County, to protect Medicare.

“I have almost always voted the party line,” said Gloria Bolender, a Republican from Clarence who is caring for her 80-year-old mother. “This is the second time in my life I’ve voted against my party.”

Pat Gillick, a Republican from East Amherst, who also cast a ballot for Ms. Hochul, said, “The privatization of Medicare scares me.”

So, when Medicare erupted as a driving issue in the race, Ms. Corwin, a wealthy former Wall Street analyst, was knocked off balance and struggled to respond.

In the closing hours of the race, Ms. Corwin admitted as much, saying about her rival’s attacks: “When she started making these comments, I thought, ‘This is so outrageous no one would ever believe it.’ Apparently some people did.”

Jane L. Corwin this afternoon obtained a court order from State Supreme Court Justice Russell P. Buscaglia barring a certification of a winner in the special 26th Congressional District race pending a show-cause hearing before him later this week.

The Buffalo News obtained a copy of the show-cause order Buscaglia signed this morning based on a petition the Republican candidate filed Monday.

Under the judge's 11-page order, attorneys for Corwin have until Wednesday to serve copies of the court order on the election boards of Erie, Niagara, Genesee, Orleans, Wyoming, Livingston and Monroe counties, their sheriff's offices, the state Board of Elections and her three opponents.

Pending court proceedings before Buscaglia on Thursday at the earliest, the judge also impounded all voting equipment and enjoined the canvass of paper ballots "except as directed by this court" and "temporarily enjoined and restrained from certifying" the winner pending that court hearing.

Remember when we were discussing this impending election in the 2012 Forum and you linked that "Satire" site on Corwin? I saw on there where someone(I forget) said he'd vote for Corwin because she was better looking or some such shite? That seems like so long ago!

Nope, it looks like they are blaming the "democrats" for using "fear" tactics and now terrible they are for doing that to his plan! Guess he forgot all the "fear" tactics they used during the health care reform debates!

Republicans don't have the guts to admit they were wrong, and their to scared to lay the blame on the tea party for fear they will get a teabagger challenger come primary time! Looks like they will continue to run on the Ryan plan, force republicans to back it and then hope that people are to dumb to see through their pack of lies! While they will always have their braindead base, the majority of americans aren't going to buy it this time!

Their in deep trouble and they know it! They can say all they want to but if they continue to back Ryans plan, written for him by corporate america, and if they continue to be afraid of the tea party group, they will just keep digging he hole deeper and deeper!

Yes, you've just described the vise grip Koch inc has all their little republicon candidates locked into. Of course the gopropaganda machine isnt' going to stop lying and say Ryan's Atlas Shrugged is what it is and the voters are not stupid.

That's wonderful news and a good omen for 2012. Ryan shot the Republicans in the foot with his Medicare proposal.
