NRA and Florida gag pediatricians: no more firearm safety advice for parents

Cory Doctorow at 7:19 AM Sunday, May 8, 2011

An NRA-lobbied bill in Florida will prohibit doctors, especially pediatricians, from asking patients about their gun-safety. The bill is expected to be signed by Governor Rick Scott. Pediatricians routinely advise parents about seatbelts, bike helmets, etc, but this law will make it illegal for a doctor to offer advice on gun safety unless "it's directly relevant to the patient's care or the safety of others." Comparable legislation is under discussion in North Carolina and Alabama.

Confirmed, Fox "news" makes you stupid

The ones you are noticing are more terrified than anything else. They are lashing out because they are comfortable; and to acknowledge what is happening is a threat to that comfort. Ignore them, for they are not the voices that will rise in the coming days, months and years. They are not the voices of our collected humanity. Not sure what's in it for the NRA to keep gun safety out of the lives of families in Florida?

Are they insane?

I truly don't get this. When my dad was working for the NRA (back in the late 70s) the organization was all ABOUT gun safety and even ran hundreds of gun safety courses across the country every year.

Looks like they've gone from nutty to nuttier. This LaPierre character doesn't sound like he has all his marbles.

So isn't this defined as big government interfereing in the lives of Americans?

Pathetic!

Florida is going to hell in a handbasket! It's so bad here it makes me wish for the days when Jeb Bush was governor, and that's pretty sad!

That is very sad, PT..and my hope for Florida is that when the people are finally fed up with all the searing fascist bullshit around there..they will get some real people in charge who will actually turn that handbasket around!
