In Op-Ed Gaffe, Mitt Romney Criticizes Obama's 'Peacetime' Spending

Quote:...
On Monday morning, Romney told readers of the Manchester, NH Union-Leader in an op-ed that Americans are living in a "peacetime" economy.
...
"Sure, foreign policy and national security aren't Romney's strong points," [Steve]Benen wrote, "but as slow as he is on the uptake, I'd like to think he knows what 'peacetime' is, and what it isn't."

Then came a scathing attack from VetVoice, the progressive-leaning veterans groups. Under the headline "Servicemembers: You're not at war," VetVoice's Richard Allen Smith listed the name of 36 servicemembers he said have been killed in Iraq or Afghanistan since April 1.
...
"He meant to say since World War II," Romney spokesperson Eric Ferhstrom told Dave Weigel.
This is the op-ed:

I gather the "peacetime economy" comment was not intended as a factual statement.

Never mind.

Confirmed, Fox "news" makes you stupid

The ones you are noticing are more terrified than anything else. They are lashing out because they are comfortable; and to acknowledge what is happening is a threat to that comfort. Ignore them, for they are not the voices that will rise in the coming days, months and years. They are not the voices of our collected humanity. They are the old voices of fear and impotence. - Anonymous

Oh, Mitt.

When will you come to terms with the fact that a) Obama is a hundred times the man you are on your best day and b) You will never, ever be President?

Maybe he should borrow a phrase from his fellow Republican, Jon Kyl "It was never meant to be a factual statement."

Republicans in general don't seem to be very keen on "factual statements."

Probably because they can't make any without sounding like Democrats.

Mitt's latest gaffe..really stupid.
>snip<

During a brief Q&A after an eight-minute speech, Romney was asked about his economic message. He replied, "I just can't help but notice that -- you remember that during the Ronald Reagan-Jimmy Carter debates, that Ronald Reagan came up with this great thing about the Misery Index? And he hung that around Jimmy Carter's neck and that had a lot to do with Jimmy Carter losing. Well we're going to have to hang the Obama Misery Index around his neck. And I'll tell you, the fact that you've got people in this country really squeezed with gasoline getting so expensive, with commodities getting so expensive, families are having a hard time making ends meet. So we're going to have to do talk about that, and housing foreclosures and bankruptcies and higher taxation. We're going to hang him with that -- uh, so to speak, metaphorically, with, uh, you have to be careful these days, I learned that."

thank you for adding that news to this thread, Cha.

Vomit what i found worse, when added to his having said it - and he should have just stopped there and apologized profusely, and humbly! - was his adding "uh, you have to be careful these days, I learned that."

because that is what it always comes down to with them, "oops! did i say that OUT LOUD?!" in adding what he did, he got to point out that his mistake was in saying it, not in what it said. i am sure it took a lot of rehearsing to get the timing right on looking honestly embarrassed - i.e., providing "plausible deniability." that is how dog whistle racism works.
that is how his mob gets away with saying racist, despicable things, again and again. Angryfire
