Many cops and firefighters have thrown their allegiance to the GOP for years — union members who frequently stray from labor’s longtime support for Democrats.

A host of new Republican governors is changing all that.

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker and others took aim at the GOP’s most powerful labor antagonists but ended up hitting some of the party’s best friends too — leaving public-safety unions fearful this year’s attack on teachers might easily be next year’s attack on them.

It’s a political shift that could have significant repercussions, and not just because these right-leaning union members vote for Republicans in sizable numbers. Angry cops and firefighters make for bad PR — especially after Republicans under President George W. Bush aligned themselves so successfully with the heroes of Sept. 11 in the years since then.

Rep. Keith Murphy (R-Bedford) called the police and firefighters who were protesting a Wisconsin-style amendment "thugs". I guess he won't be having too many union members at his Manchester pub any time soon!

I'm very very impressed. Keep it up, *holes. If that guy really owns a pub, I can see the boycott coming all the way from SoCal.

Public safety personnel are particularly at risk from union-busting legislation, because the rationale can always be that strike actions endanger public safety.

I hate to say it but when Rep Keith Murphy along with other Republicans have gone beyond a simple miscalculation. They misread their supposed power and I think the term, "The beginning of the end", for the Republicans.

Everyone in the Police and Fire communities should have understood the sign when the Republicans fought tooth and nail against health benefits from rescuers and construction workers needing health benefits. They were of no political use to the Republicans and tossed aside......
