An Arizona state senator has set off a hot debate over racism and taxpayer-funded education of illegal immigrants with her public reading of a constituent letter that said most Hispanic students "hate America."

"Most of the Hispanic students do not want to be educated but rather be gang members and gangsters," said State Sen. Lori Klein on the chamber floor Friday, quoting from a letter by a Phoenix-area substitute public school teacher sent to Senate President Russell Pearce. "They hate America and are determined to reclaim this area for Mexico."

Klein, a Republican, was speaking in support of a bill which would require the Arizona Department of Education to collect data on students who cannot prove their "lawful residence" in the U.S. in order to better estimate the cost of educating illegal immigrants.

The presentation drew an impassioned rebuke from Democratic State Sen. Steve Gallardo, who questioned the authenticity of the anonymous letter, and called the reading of it into the public record deplorable.

While the racist Senator read the letter and endorsed the racist feelings, these were the words of a substitute teacher. That teacher needs to be FIRED NOW! No excuse to expose innocent children to such rank and vile racism.

Actually reading the article and the letter makes it worse.

First, the station couldn't verify that he actually worked as a substitute, and Glendale had no record of him going back several years.

The letter describes one particularly unruly class, which may or may not have happened, but ends with a plea to "stop the invasion" which gives a big hint this guy isn't exactly unbiased in his attitude.

Now, we already know Pearce is an asshole from when he said our state citizenship trumps our national citizenship, so what sort of person would he give this letter to?

So what other examples did she read to illustrate conditions inside Phoenix schools?

How does a "substitute" teacher know which students are undocumented? Did he take a survey? Did he ask for IDs or did he just assume because they looked Hispanic that they must be undocumented?

Kids aren't idiots. They probably picked up on his racist attitude and maybe they hated him, not America.

I'm really tired of racists, bigots, and other assorted filth who pass for humans. I live in El Pueblo de Nuestra Señora la Reina de los Angeles de Porciúncula, and I consider this part of Mexico. These people inhabited our southwest long before we ever got here, and it's ridiculous to pretend otherwise. They have as much right to be here as I do, maybe more.

Racist letter read by Arizona lawmaker to state Senate may have been a hoax

Two Arizona lawmakers set off charges of racism after one instructed the other to read a controversial letter on the state Senate floor last week during a debate over five immigration bills.

The letter, allegedly from a man who works as a substitute teacher in Glendale, said that Hispanic students "hate America" and only want to become "gang members and gangsters," according to ABC News.

Problem is, local reporters could not find anyone under the man's name who had worked for any of the area school districts, and key details in the letter were contradicted by school officials.

That left some groups suggesting the letter was an outright hoax...
