Is this just about other discussion forums?
What about "liberal" news sites like FDL that seem to live to criticize PBO?

It's more effective if we focus on specific pieces that come out of FDL rather than the website itself. However, that said, we've discussed this as an issue of discussion forums vs. media sites or political organizations. HuffPo, FDL, etc. aren't first and foremost discussion forums, rather media sites. They have an active community lending comments to the articles, but then so does the New York Times, CNN, et al. They are open to criticism as media organizations, and their media pundits, e.g. Jane Hamsher, are open to criticism as well. Focus on the content the organization itself produces rather than what its community spits out.
What we're going for here is not to make sport of just flinging insults at specific websites and initiating "board wars." It really doesn't do us much good and in the end just invites others to come try to answer to the insults with more insults, and it builds on itself such that this kind of activity takes over.

Makes perfect sense, thanks.

Excellent post, Roy and a worthy goal. But the board wars have begun anyway, despite the excellent behavior of posters on DFP.
There have been several links on DU to DFP solely because some on DU consider DFP to be full of "polarizing" figures (namely Maverick and NanceGreggs). Here's one that I came across just yesterday http://www.democraticunderground.com/dis...id=1520382
Every day, there are like 16 members and 90 guests lurking on DFP. I'm betting not all of those guests are here for a friendly visit.
I certainly don't want to do anything and will NOT do anything to add to the drama (and I'm sure that no one else does either) but I don't think that anyone should be surprised when the wars start anyway. And besides, I think that posters on DFP have been beyond reproach in the way that conversations are conducted here. The infractions don't seem all that often or all that serious.

I look at it this way, DFP serves a purpose that far exceeds the sad little cyber cess pool that is DU. Skinner screwed up his website because he was looking to maximize his profit. He also missed the boat in terms of social media. So DU is an isolated echo chamber where the same 50 or so people repeat the same sad messages over and over again. DFP has low level political figures and elected officials among our followers and gets tweeted and retweeted to thousands of people. When all those people out in the nation come to see what we are tweeting about, the last thing we want them to see is us wasting time venting about a bunch of losers. Our board is about getting Democrats elected and helping them achieve progress. Board wars would only hurt that goal rather than help it.

DU's primary reason for existence is to make money and provide a living for it's owner. I do believe he'd like to be more supportive of the Democratic party and be a real player in Democratic politics, but, as you said, he's attracted such a band of people who are generally anti-Democratic, he can't really do it.
The place now exists to play out the anti-Obama (75-80%) versus pro-Obama (20-25%) forces, and it's enough to pay the bills. That's his primary concern.

Yes, the infractions thus far aren't that often or that serious, so it's generally not been much of a big deal.
If, however, it were to get out of hand and people were doing more than what we do now - occasionally poke fun of the site or somebody there, just like we do with Huffpo or firebaggerlake, then you can be sure that we wouldn't allow it to get out of hand.
Honestly, I'm not sure why anybody would even want to compare themselves to that place - if you go to a place like reddit where Democrats and Republicans post side-by-side, you'll notice that the vitriol there is far less than it is on that "other site". So, if people on opposite sides of the political spectrum can have reasonable arguments without the hate, and WITH proper moderating, then why would anybody want to go to a place that represents a handful of basement dwelling ne'erdowells?

RE: A word about other political websites
I've got nothing against other site. I have friends from every corner of the political spectrum. If they can't see straight today its because of all the smoke, fog and dust kicked up by the past ten years of abuse.

That is why I came here, and did not contribute to the "other board's" fund drive.
I have a few criticisms of the President, but I want him re-elected. Same with other Dems.

RE: A word about other political websites
I was thrilled to find this site and I thank Nance for that. I did not contribute again to the "other site" and I will not in the future.
I would be happy to contribute here though Do you all even have a fundraising drive?

RE: A word about other political websites
Nance told me about this site as well. I still play (with ever diminishing enthusiasm) on another site many of us have/had in common, but the level of discourse is sinking fast, and when my ankles are fully uncovered, I may decide to get out of the water altogether.
Rational discourse has always ranked higher with me than being used for verbal target practice. Some people have yet to appreciate that it has always been easier to kick someone's teeth in than it is to learn to be a dentist.
