I'm alive!
Aloha Everybody -

So sorry for being late to check in, but things are a little nuts here. We are fine, and thank you so much for your concern. Here's what's happened on the Big Island....

Wouldn't you know it that the heaviest damage from the tsunami in all the islands was right in my area. Kailua Kona was nailed pretty bad. The wave breached the sea wall at Kailua Bay and washed out most of Alii street and damaged a bunch of businesses along the waterfront. The Kona Inn, King Kamehameha Hotel, Bubba Gumps Shrimp, Huggos and a bunch of other smaller businesses were damaged hard enough to be put out of business for at least a few weeks while they repair. Kailua Pier, where the cruise ships shore boats dock to bring in tourists, has been condemned so this will really hit our tourist industry bad.

In my neighborhood just south of that, Kealakekua Bay was hit hard too, and was the only spot where an entire house as taken out into the ocean. I know the people who own it so we took it kind of personally. Tomorrow the community is gathering there for a clean up so I'm gonna get my hands dirty.

No fatalities, thank the Gods, just alot of property damage. Things can be replaced. This island really knows how to pull together when they must, which today makes me proud to be a Hawaiian.

If any of you can, please donate or send your good vibes to Japan. They were really ravaged by this thing and are in a terrible state. Aloha!

RE: I'm alive!
My eye caught that "I'm alive" and I thought it might be you, Kona!

The unpredictability of Tsunamis! It hit us first but did not do much damage at all and I found out later that there was damage on the Big Island Kona Side.. and thought you would have been in the thick of it since you lived by the Coast. Where did you evacuate to and what time?

We had go up to the Heights and left around 2:30am since the TW was at 3:07am..Yikes!

Today I went into a Japanese-Hawaiian Memorial garden in our small town..closed my eyes and sent healing thoughts to Japan.

I hope Kailua Pier gets back to business soon! Grouphug So glad no one was hurt..cause you all got out, right?

P.S. How high was The Wave!?

P.S. How high was The Wave!?

The wave here was 11 feet, which was about twice as high as what they expected. The sirens jarred us out of bed at 11pm. We live quite a ways up the mountain so we were far from the danger zone, but since so many of my friends live down on the shore I was really worried about them. The actually wave didnt hit here until two hours after it was expected.

What part of Kauai are you on again? I know Kapa'a and Waimea canyon pretty well, and Hanalei and Princeville.

I hope you all are OK.

11 feet and at an unexpected time!..and you know it had to have such force to knock an entire house out into the Ocean and everything else it broke up!

I'm in Hanapepe Valley(Westside Kauai ..Waimea Canyon is on the way to the next town going West, Waimea) and because the River is right through it that leads into the Ocean we are in one of the evacuation zones. My landlady read in the paper that the entire Hanapepe River receded into the Ocean at 7am Friday morn. Here's an article on the minor damage at Port Allen because of it.

I'm glad everyone left to higher ground on Kona side..some of us dodged a bullet this time and thinking of those who desperately need help. Grouphug

RE: I'm alive!
Nice to hear from you! Very sorry to hear about all the damage and especially to your friends. I know it feels petty to even mention it, compared to Japan, but those suffering a loss suffer just as much no matter where they are. Please let them know they are in our thoughts too, and let us know if there is anything we can do to help them or your town. Grouphug

I'm so glad to hear that you are ok!
I was scared to death here on the West Coast.....and nothing even happened
except for a bit of damage in Santa Cruz...
so I can's even imagine what you and your neighbors are going through!
