RE: 300-400 bodies found in a coastal town in Japan
Japan scrambles to reach trapped victims amid devastation
Shirakawa, Japan (CNN) -- Rescuers plucked dazed survivors from collapsed homes, muddy waters and raging fires Saturday, a day after a powerful earthquake tore through Japan and unleashed waves that swallowed entire neighborhoods along the coast.
More than 900 were killed and about 700 were missing, Japanese public broadcaster NHK reported. The number is expected to go up as rescuers reach more hard-hit areas.
The 8.9-magnitude quake was centered about 130 kilometers (80 miles) from Sendai, a farming region already battling youth population losses to big cities, leaving aging residents struggling to keep up with the global economy.
In the nearby city of Shirakawa, rescuers dug through rubble with shovels to try and reach 13 neighbors trapped when the earth opened up and swallowed their homes.

the Pacific was very fortunate, as far as the tsunami went!

11.11am: Here's more details from Oxfam on the impact of the tsunami on Pacific island nations.
Papua New Guinea: The Boram hospital in Wewak suffered serious damage when it was flooded by waves. Around 50 of the 100 patients were evacuated to the police station compound where most are lying outside. Heavy rains are now reported in the area, causing concerns about sanitation.
The Solomon Islands: The worst damage was in the northern Isabel province. "The water is reported to have reached 50 metres inland and in one village, a house was destroyed and several canoes washed into the sea," said Oxfam representative Joe Weber

this is a live feed:
http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2011/mar...rmath-live
11.20am: AP has more details of the scene of devastation in Sendai, the biggest city in the area near the quake's epicentre.
Miles from the ocean's edge, weary, mud-spattered survivors wandered streets strewn with fallen trees, crumpled cars, even small airplanes. Relics of lives now destroyed were everywhere half a piano, a textbook, a soiled red sleeping bag.
Rescue workers plied boats through murky waters around flooded structures, nosing their way through a sea of detritus, while smoke from at least one large fire billowed in the distance. Power and phone reception was cut, while hundreds of people lined up outside the few still-operating supermarkets for basic commodities. The gas stations on streets not covered with water were swamped with people waiting to fill their cars

check this out:

1135: Alan Margerison, a British businessman living in Tokyo, describes the scene there as relatively calm. "I went out into Shibuya, one of the downtown areas, it's normally very busy on the weekend. Today there were not as many people around... there were people getting their hair done in the salons, I saw some people having their nails done. I think in Tokyo, people are trying to get back to life as it normally is, but they're also very worried about the news they're hearing."

We try to normalize when we can't do anything else

Immediately after the Northridge earthquake in Los Angeles the evening news in Santa Barbara (and later on, the local newspaper itself) was full of sidebar stories of how people here tried to get their morning coffee with the electricity completely gone. One little breakfast shop ran a cord into the fire station next door, I believe. (I myself have a gas stove, so I dragged the old Melitta carafe out and made drip coffee. Fortunately I didn't have to grind the beans first.)
I was awakened before dawn by the rolling of the earth, and we lost electricity seconds later. I knew that it was a big earthquake with the epicenter someplace else. I remembered how many times when I was still having to get up at 6:00 a.m. that if it was foggy my clock radio would wake me up with some station in San Diego, so I took a chance that the radio in my car would be able to pick it up, and I was right.
As I listened to all the coffee stories I realized: We were giddy with relief that It Wasn't Us. It was only a sidebar -- because we're all connected somehow to people in any earthquake region in our state.
But locally, we were okay. Worried and horrified as we were for friends and relations a hundred miles to the south, we were normalizing as best we could.
Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it's the only thing that ever does. ~Margaret Mead~

81 rescued from ship swept off by tsunami, reports say
Vessel was carrying dock workers; 4 trains missing, fifth derailed
TOKYO — A ship that was swept away by the tsunami on Japan's northeastern coast was found and all 81 aboard were airlifted to safety, the AFP news agency reported Friday, citing Japanese news reports.
<..> Four trains running in a coastal area of Miyagi and Iwate prefectures remained unaccounted for after the tsunami hit.
It was not known how many people were aboard the trains.
Another train on the Senseki Line was found derailed near Nobiru Station after the quake. No information was available about the fate of the passengers and crew on the train.

Rescue efforts will be huge. I hope they find many, many survivors.
