This coming election will require more participation than ever by all of us; more than even 2008; which was maximum overdrive for all of us.
The "why vote" meme is perhaps the most insidious. Why vote? Really? Like, we really need to know more at this point?
The middle class has been divested in the largest transfer of wealth in history. We have been lied into wars so that we can steal oil. "Conservatives" are still working on tapping into all that social security money so that it can to K-Street instead of to those who earned it. We're in a race to the bottom of our standard of living with the rest of the world. Environmental protection is under heavy assault. Progress made over the past 2 years is under assault. Labor is under assault.
Why vote? Pfeh.
I agree. I get so tired of hearing people who "claim" to be liberals, democrats or progressives, start talking about how they are "tired" of it all, and they won't voter for Obama in 2012! It's the same crap I heard on the other board before the 2010 elections, and look what happened then! We will be dealing with the outcome of "NOT VOTING" for years!
I checked out my own state, Washington, and found out that over a half million people did not vote in 2010 that did vote in 2008! I heard in Wisconsin it was something like 800,000 less turnout in 2010. This is jut plain insane!
In Washington state we had a chance to tax those making over $250,000 a year. It was not a state tax on everybody, and could only be changed to add more people with a vote. Those who opposed it, the rich, were able to paint it as a state income tax that would be leveled at everyone once they got the rich paying. Even though in the voters pamphlet it stated there had to be a vote by the people to change it, people voted against it because they were afraid they would be taxed later on down the road! If those same half million people would have took the time to vote, we would not be seeing all the cuts and problems we are now having in Washington state.
The right wing trolls have already started their "why vote" crap and we have to counter that with the facts! Unless we want more states taken over by republicans, and more states trying to "balance" their budgets on the backs of the middle class and the poor, we have to make sure this tactic does not work in 2012. If we get the voters out we win, if they listen to the trolls and the Obama haters and don't vote we lose!
Democrats need to make sure the votes do NOT forget what is happening. They need to take out ads attacking republicans for giving tax breaks to the rich and cutting programs for those in need.
The middle class has to open their eyes and see that republicans are NOT good for their future. Many of them are union members who may lose their rights to bargain with their employers. They may lose wages, and benefits. I think this is what it will take to get them to open their eyes.
NOT voting is NOT an option!
