Email From Feminist Majority, Now They're Worried
Oh Noes! We've lost pro-choice votes in the House and Senate!! Oh Noes!!! We must band together so we don't go backwards on the progress that's been made!
Progress you say? Oh yes, NOW they recognize progress. And want more money, er.. help. I unsubscribed and will be letting them know why. I can't take this shit anymore. "I am very worried because pro-choice forces have just lost some 44 votes in the US House of Representatives and 7 in the Senate as a result of the 2010 election. Now is the time where we must unite to fight to advance reproductive rights and women's rights. Become a member of the Feminist Majority today. We need your support and confidence more than ever in these very challenging times. In addition to the change of the balance of power in Congress, some 18 state legislative bodies changed to anti-choice majorities. Despite these setbacks, in the past two years, we made some real gains for women: Congress passed the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act to correct a Supreme Court decision gutting a woman's right to bring lawsuits to court to fight against wage discrimination. Congress passed the Hate Crimes Prevention Act, which includes protections for women, the LGBTQ community, and the disabled President Obama issued an executive order reversing the Global Gag Rule immediately upon taking office United Nations Population Fund appropriations withheld by the Bush administration were released to help poor women's reproductive health in the developing nations Some abstinence-only funding was eliminated and family planning funding was increased Feminists were appointed to key executive positions and two women were confirmed to the Supreme Court We cannot let right-wing opposition in Congress or in the states drive us backwards. The struggle for feminist policies and programs, never easy, has become much, much harder. We have a lot of lost ground to recover and many future dreams to realize. That is why I am writing today to ask you to join the Feminist Majority. Frankly, we need you - your support will be critically important in 2011. Given the results of the 2010 elections, we need your support to help us fight reactionary efforts to defund family planning, to cut social security and Medicare, to defund reproductive health clinics, to stop both the domestic Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) and the International VAWA, and to build for 2012. With your help, we have been building and winning for women, defending women's rights, protecting the gains of the last 40 years - and now we must do more. Please join the Feminist Majority today. We must be strong at this historic moment." |
