Raw sewage, hookworm and civil rights: UN official shocked at poverty in rural Alabama

https://www.rawstory.com/2017/12/raw-sew...l-alabama/

From the article:
Quote:A United Nations official investigating poverty in the United States was shocked at the level of environmental degradation in some areas of rural Alabama, saying he had never seen anything like it in the developed world.
...

The tour through Alabama's rural communities is part of a two-week investigation by the U.N. on poverty and human rights abuses in the United States. So far, U.N. investigators have visited cities and towns in California and Alabama, and will soon travel to Puerto Rico, Washington, D.C., and West Virginia.
...

According to the Census Bureau, nearly 41 million people in the U.S. live in poverty. That's second-highest rate of poverty among rich countries, as measured by the percentage of people earning less than half the national median income, according to Quartz.

These income and wealth disparities affect minorities the most. Black, Hispanic, and Native American children, for example, are two to three times more likely to live in poverty than white kids, according to a study using Census data by the Annie E. Casey Foundation.

...

As one of "those people", I have never bought into the mythical America that so many in the majority are beholden to. For me, the US has never tried, but only half-heartedly when forced to do so, to live up to the lofty goals of its founding documents.

The Top 1% own and run the government, the politicians lie and tell everyone that they work for the people, while trying to disenfranchise the people they don't like. They keep pushing supply-side economics and keep cutting taxes for the rich, while cutting social services for the 99% rest of us to keep "those people" entering the military-industrial complex and prison-industrial complex to keep it working. The idiot voters keep voting in their best interests, against our/The Public best interest because they hate the idea of paying taxes so "those people" can live on the government dole and take all the jobs and move into their bright white neighborhoods.

The system is not broken, it is working as planned. Sadshake

Conservatism (n.), the irrational fear that somewhere someone you think is inferior is being treated as your equal.

What an eye opener, but it's time our poverty is examined. Disease can be stopped, raw sewage was gone in the 1800s, or so we thought. That any person has to live like that today is an egregious failure of and to we the people. Of by voting in the nuts who love the bootstrap, not the person. To us all by thinking tax money is theirs to give to the tinkle downers who keep it in their hands instead of making laws that help, not keep down the poor like now. The DT tax reform is the bitter end of our democracy.
