GOP's Emmer concedes Minn. governor's race

DELANO, Minn. — Republican Tom Emmer conceded the Minnesota governor's race to Mark Dayton on Wednesday, surrendering after a statewide recount failed to substantially change the Democrat's nearly 9,000-vote election night lead.

"Minnesotans made their choice, by however thin a margin, and we respect that choice," Emmer told reporters gathered at his home outside Minneapolis.

He could have sued over the election outcome but decided against it after a key state Supreme Court decision went against him. He cited the court's opinion in his concession, but also alluded to major issues facing the state.

"I do not believe a delay in the seating of the next governor will unite us or help us move the state forward," Emmer said.

Great news! Does this mean Democrats will control redistricting for the state?

What do you think about this, Willinois!

Control over redistricting, 'a secret perk,' at stake in election

St. Paul, Minn. — Minnesota's next governor could play a large role in shaping the state's political landscape well beyond his time in office.

The new governor, along with the Legislature, will redraw Minnesota's political map to reflect the population shifts of the 2010 census. Those new districts, which must be ready in time for the 2012 election, will remain in place for the next decade.

Under current law, legislators will start redrawing boundaries in March 2011, when final census numbers arrive. The new districts must be in place by early 2012, well ahead of that year's primary election.

****

That means state senators who are elected this year will serve a two-year term, rather than their typical four years, and that they'll have to run again in 2012 -- if they still have districts.

Good. While he's at it, maybe he could redistrict out Michelle fucking Bachmann.

You are good with this Breaking News Stuff, Kindness of Blue!

This is WONDERFUL NEWS! The repubs wanted to drag this out until January and get their agenda pushed in their State House until the last possible minute..it sounded like.

9, 000 votes are 9, 000 more people who wanted Mark Dayton!

Good for Minnesota!

Thanks, Cha! I've edited news transcripts for so long and now finally have time to read news that I'm interested in Happy21

Yeah, there's no spinning the outcome here and I'm glad Emmer is graciously, albeit kind of late, bowing out. Unlike sore loser Joe Miller in Alaska - not that we're gaining much in Murkowski but at least we won't have another GOP roughneck in Congress.

You've edited news transcripts, huh? Are you retired from that?

Joe Miller is a Palin endorsement and a giant teabagger so I think Murkowski is better and I read something about her being in "The Mod Squad"(Moderates)..so good, but of course that could change.

Oh, not retired yet. But it's cool. I'm only doing NPR now. But used to do local and in this red town, it is infuriating and depressing and I finally let it go, come what may. OMG, years ago, Fox News made me want to slit my wrist and just end it all until I signed up on DU and finally let that go. Now I can't believe I'm letting DU slip away.

roflmao Sorry to laugh but I wonder if Murkowski got kicked enough by her party and Palin to run more to the center. But you're right she is much better than that guy.
