AU Action Alert! Support Public Schools; Oppose Private School Vouchers

Speaker of the House John Boehner (R-Ohio) and U.S. Sen. Joseph Lieberman (I-Conn.) are determined to revive a federally funded school voucher “experiment” in the District of Columbia. The program, which is being phased out, pays for tuition at religious and other private schools.

It has done nothing to boost student performance and served mainly to prop up religious schools at taxpayer expense while undermining public education.

This push is on despite numerous studies that have shown that voucher subsidies do not improve public education. In addition, voters have rejected the idea at the polls several times.

But the main problem with vouchers is that they force taxpayers to support religion and violate the fundamental right of conscience. Eighty percent of students in the D.C. program used vouchers to attend parochial schools that integrate religion into their curriculum and have little to no accountability.
