Why the left is angry at Obama

Dem Rep. Anthony Weiner, who has a real talent for crystallizing liberal anger at Obama into pithy phrases, has just released a statement opening fire on all the talk about a pending "deal" on the tax cuts. It gets at a key reason the left is ticked at Obama:

Democrats should welcome the chance to tell the American people what we will fight for. We should be standing up for the middle class and extending unemployment insurance for out-of-work Americans.

What Weiner is saying is that there's no practical reason to signal a willingness to deal until you've put up a fight and forced the other side to defend itself. The left's gripe with Obama is as much about the President's sense of what's pragmatic as it is about ideology.

Gosh, Obama got the tax cuts for middle class Americans, an unemployment extension, PLUS MORE.

Republicans got tax cuts for the rich.

Weiner doesn't know how to stand up and pillory them with that?

I don't think the left is angry at Obama. The far left is, but they've been angry at him even before he was sworn in! I think they just like being angry just for the sake of it.

Weiner is talking to, and about, his base. He is no more representative of the left than I am. Unlike the right, the left is a diverse group of people and not all of us spend all our time being angry.

A voice of reason! There certainly are some people who just like to be angry! And then there's the rest of us.

I think some of those on the 'Left' never, ever listened to what the man actually said he'd do.

They saw 'Black Man' and though that he was Eldridge Cleaver, Dr.Martin Luther King, and Muhammad Ali all rolled into one.

They got a Harvard-trained Constitutional scholar, and can't for the life of them figure out how that came to be.

I never considered that; there are some really good writers that that could be true of, thus their constant griping. It goes back again to those folks who are just never happy. Hated idiot son, hate Obama, just want to kvetch about how much this world sucks.

A lot of those on the "left" don't take in the whole picture..they're good at sound bytes..Steve Benen being one of the important exceptions. Fistbump_1

Who babylonsister first turned me onto..I would read an article she posted and think..who wrote that and sure enough is was Benen again..after a while I started going there myself.

Now we have his links on our DFP Front Page. I saw him once on Rachel's..he looks the part of a super savvy political reporter with a major cool sense of humor~ Wave

I agree with many here that it isn't the base of the party that is fuming, it is the fringe left and by that I mean the anarchists and primary sore losers. No matter what Pres Obama does or does not do, they will employ pretzel logic to slam him. It is this abject disrespect for the man (with perhaps a side of racism) that fuels their vitriol. A pox on both their websites, DU and OET.

What part during the campaign, when he said "reach across the aisle" over and over, and also said "tax increases during a recession are bad" how did they miss this?

Angry Black Lady has an interesting take on all this, and I agree wholeheartedly. I frontpaged her post at my website, and she included a lotof links to other site that have the same take.
