Volunteers, nurses and even official archivists dusted dirt and grass off every card, even the notes written on paper plates, and especially the ones attached to teddy bears with crayon-colored wishes for little Christina-Taylor Green. They kept rocks and crepe paper, expired plants and empty vases, Arizona flags and rain-spattered posters, because every piece meant something to someone; and if this month of mourning has taught them anything, it's this: Out of chaos, beauty will come.
