Meet the Press sets the tone that other TV news shows and networks follow. It's the New York Times of television. How many anti-war guests did they have on their show after 2001? How often do they have a real liberal on their panel? Rachel is a recent addition, but most often they balance strong conservatives with a centrist reporter who tries to appear fair. They have a pattern of marginalizing or ignoring any viewpoint that's beyond the center-left.

The eerie thing about Cenk is that he is the spitting image of a guy I went to high school with named Marcus Watts. Marcus was huge, a football champion. Had a brain the size of a walnut. Back in those days, it was not unheard of for such sports champions to "slide through" the actual schoolwork because they had to graduate in order to get to college and start getting in on those lucrative sports deals. Marcus never cracked a book, never wrote a report, never did a lick of homework, never produced a single bit of evidence that he should graduate high school. Instead, he sat next to guys like me, and leaned on us for ours. We refused him on pain of a severe beating. So I handed over whatever work I had to him, and so did many others. In the rare instance he was called on to say something, his vapid, neanderthal grunts were met with glowing praise and cheer from the teachers, who rated them on par with the most intelligent commentary of the valedictorian.

Why? Because he was Marcus. The football star. He could do no wrong, and got praised for crap that would have brought a shower of rotten fruit and an angry note home for the average student not headed for a college sports contract. Marcus' farts in class were hilarious and tolerated. His loud mouth and threatening shennanigans in class were just a heart warming reminder of this great culture of ours, and the nation behind it. No matter what stupid, blundering, insensitive or emotionally stunted thing Marcus did, everyone loved him; and the big simeon grin that spread across his face as he was applauded for another stage dive for dopes, showed that he knew it.

That's the look that Cenk has on his face. As the hulking idiot lumbers through his thoughts, clearly uncomfortable and unable to elucidate them like anyone else who had earned a place in front of the cameras, I cannot help but see his face morph into Marcus'.

My senior year was the last time I saw Marcus and I never knew what happened with him. Perhaps he abandoned football and became an astrophysicist, although I find that as unlikely as I find the possibility of Cenk ever being in front of a camera for a good reason.

Ed was on with Cenk and he was totally low-key and complimentary towards the President. I think Ed is finally beginning to understand that Obama does not tip his hand when he makes his moves. That's who he is. That's how he's always going to be regardless of who doesn't like it. (I'm talking to you professional lefties and wannabees).

Towards the end of the show Cenk showed the poll where only 9% of the respondents disapproved of the President's SOTU proposals. So, apparently Cenk didn't want to be in that minority for one day. What a fool he would have looked like to be ranting on the president's proposals when 91% agree with them.

I would prefer a "constructive" tone to the criticism, though most of these folks redeem themselves in the end, even if the style of people like Ed is a bit more abrasive. Ed appeals more to the "blue collar" Democrats; and as Wisconsin proves, a little populism can go a long way. When he "goes off" on people on his side, he's actually bonding with many of those types who hear this sort of crap every day from their coworkers. Once he has their ear, he can steer them in the right direction - which is left actually.

I don't always agree with Rachel but I've always found her arguments to be valid and rational. Not so with Cenk. He's a broken record of generalized hand-wringing about everything Obama does and facts seem to have no impact on his way of thinking. It makes him more like the right-wing talk radio hosts than I'm comfortable with.

I do think we should have some tolerance for liberals who criticize Democrats. We have a lot of experience with this and I think we know when the line is crossed. I would say that Ed is closer to the line than Rachel. I don't recall him saying not to vote for Democrats but I would say that is where the line is.

I am not sure that the discontent accounts for the losses in the midterms. Midterms are poorly attended and the Republicans, having gotten killed the previous two elections, were simply more energized.

It's unfortunate to be sure since losing a third election, I think, would force them to engage in some much needed introspection. But I do think it was their election. They did well but given the realities of the bad economy and the number of seats open in districts that were Republican districts, they did not do much better than would be expected.

In any event I don't think we will benefit from being intolerant of our own. Mostly I agree with Ed. I am still a fan of Keith Olbermann. I do like Rachel and have learned a lot the last two nights from her exploration into nuclear power plants.

Now Norm Goldman, he is genuinely annoying. And there's another lady who comes on at WCP after him--I do not like her.

another reason I do not like Cenk, if you disagree with him your wrong and his followers are fanatics. Even if when someone corrects him He doesn't admit it and spins it. I also don't like the way his voice sounds..like someone is grabbing his nads. He had a Youtube about Obama and the Union Workers. He was commeting a Fox guest, and the guest used the word 'Cause Celebre' instead of going right into his argument he felt the need to make fun of the word and he thought the guy made it up..in 30 secs I googled it and found out what it meant..IMO that made Cenk look like a fool.
