Only 26% Of Americans Want Tax Cuts Extended For Wealthy. Apparently They Are The Same 26% Who Turned Out To Vote Last Month

I think it’s important to know just how hard our elected officials are working, and maybe more importantly, just for whom they are working so hard.

A recent survey conducted by CBS News indicates that only 26% of American adults want to extend the Bush tax cuts for those families making over $250K yearly. This is the most recent poll, and previous polls showed the percentage wanting to extend the tax cuts for all to be higher than 26%, but never more than 40%, and always below that percentage wishing to let them expire for the rich.
But let us not be deceived – $250K is not, in practice, actually $250K. That is the dollar amount only for those taking the standard deductions. The reality is that very few people making that much money file a 1040EZ. Most people in this category itemize, deducting mortgage interest, state and local taxes, business expenses and many other possible deductions and tax credits. Therefore, families making well in excess of $300,000 would not see a tax increase at all. According to the Tax Policy Center, only about 2% of American households would end up paying higher tax rates in the event they expired only for the wealthy. And only 3% of businesses would be affected, with many of these not what most people think of as a “small business” in either scope or size.
Besides, as if the Reagan and Bush the Lesser Recessions were not proof enough, statistic prove that the wealthy do not “reinvest” these tax savings back into the economy – they hoard it. Look at it this way: if you were to inherit $25,000 from a rich and benevolent relative, you’d probably spend almost every penny of it by paying debts, upgrading your car, sending your kids to college, donating to your church, etc., etc. However, if a multi-millionaire were to inherit the same $25,000, it would most likely go into his investment portfolio. It is a fact that the working class spend a much higher percentage of their income than the wealthy.

Though the official numbers won’t be out for a while yet, we do know that the number of registered Democrats who voted last month was markedly less than the number of registered Republicans that voted. I simply continue to wonder how long it will take for those working-class Republican voters to realize for whom their candidates are working so hard.

I hope the Bush Tax Scheme is allowed to expire. The tax hike to the rest of us peons will be minuscule. Since John Q. America seems unaware of the tax cuts Pres Obama has given us, they won't notice the slight increase either.

To hell with the rich. They have been at the trough for some 10 years now. Enough.

Is féidir linn.

The sad part is, many os those idiots feel that they are actually in that top 2%.

I told a guy that was hypervenilating about it that it wouldn't affect him, but he was certain it would raise his taxes.

He makes $32K a year, and considers himself in the top 2% of wage earners in this country.

Couldn't tell him otherwise.

xclamation Call your Senator is the emails I'm getting today
Democracy for America Wrote:Today is a make-or-break moment in the fight to let the Bush-Cheney tax cuts for the wealthy expire as planned at the end of this year. Over the weekend, the White House continued to work on striking a tax cut deal with Republicans that would increase deficit spending by 700 billion dollars over the next ten years.

So instead of playing hardball with Republicans by exposing them for this reckless spending, they're ready to cave again. Instead of exposing Republicans for voting against tax cuts for the middle class, instead of daring them to be responsible for raising taxes on all Americans if the Bush-Cheney tax cuts expire before Republicans agree to the Democratic plan, instead of providing America with real leadership and a fiscally responsible backbone that sets Democrats apart from Republicans -- this White House is ready to surrender.

The U.S. Senate can stop them. Call your Senators right now and demand "no deals on tax cuts for the wealthy."

Sen. Gregg - (202) 224-3324
Sen. Shaheen - (202) 224-2841
REPORT YOUR CALL HERE

Thanks to Nancy Pelosi's continued leadership, the House of Representatives has already told the White House "No deals on tax cuts for the wealthy" and passed a bill that fulfills President Obama's campaign promise to not raise taxes on people who make less than $250,000 a year, while letting the the Bush Tax Cuts for those making more than $250,000 a year expire.

Now, it's up to the U.S. Senate to do that same thing. But they will only do it if they hear an overwhelming outcry from all of us telling them that we need them to go to the mat to stop Republicans -- even if President Obama won't.

That's why we've joined with progressive allies at the MoveOn, Progressive Change Campaign Committee, CREDO Action, True Majority and SEIU for today's emergency call-in day.

Pundits and scared Democrats in Washington will be advocating capitulation, but we need Senate Democrats to stand strong. They have the upper hand, with big majorities of Americans who want to see the wealthy pay their fair share. A new poll from CBS shows that only 26% of voters want the tax cuts for the wealthy extended.

If the Republicans are so committed to stopping tax cuts for the middle class unless tax breaks for millionaires are extended too, then they should have to defend that position in the next election.

Democrats in the Senate should make Republicans vote over and over and over again against relief for struggling families and prove to the American people that their millionaire donors are more important to them than their constituents.

That's what the American people want the Senate to do. Let's make sure Senate Democrats get the message. Please make your call right now.

Sen. Gregg - (202) 224-3324
Sen. Shaheen - (202) 224-2841

Thank you for everything you do.

MoveOn Wrote:Dear MoveOn member,

This is the make-or-break moment in fight to end George Bush's millionaire tax bailout. So organizations across the progressive movement are holding an emergency call-in day right now.

The White House has made clear that they intend to strike a deal with Republicans that would extend a huge tax giveaway for the top 2%.1 They've given up on this critical issue without a fight.

But the Senate can still stop this disastrous deal from happening. They will only do it, though, if they hear an overwhelming outcry from all of us telling them that we need them to to go to the mat to stop the millionaire bailout—even if President Obama won't.

That's why we're joining with our progressive allies at the Progressive Change Campaign Committee, Democracy for America, CREDO Action, True Majority and SEIU for today's emergency call-in day.

Can you call Sen. Shaheen and tell her that Americans everywhere are counting on her to fight like hell to stop tax bailouts for millionaires?

Senator Jeanne Shaheen
Phone: 202-224-2841

Then, please report your call by clicking here:

The House of Representatives just passed an extension of middle class tax cuts with the intention of letting tax breaks that only benefit the top 2% expire. A similar vote was defeated in the Senate this weekend.

Now is when the rubber meets the road. Many in Washington will be advocating capitulation, but we need Senate Democrats to stand strong. They have the upper hand, with big majorities of Americans opposing the millionaire bailout.

If the Republicans are so committed to stopping tax relief for middle class families unless tax breaks for millionaires are extended too, then they should have to defend that position out in the open—not by forcing back-room deals.

They should have to vote over and over and over again against relief for struggling families so the American people can see that their millionaire donors are more important to them than their constituents. They should have to engage in an old-fashioned filibuster, and defend their position on the Senate floor all day, every day and straight through the night.

That is what the American people want the Senate to do. A new poll from CBS shows that only 26% of voters want the tax breaks for millionaires extended.2

But time is short so if we want the Senate to fight, they need to hear from us today. Please call Sen. Shaheen right away.

Thanks for all you do.

Confirmed, Fox "news" makes you stupid

The ones you are noticing are more terrified than anything else. They are lashing out because they are comfortable; and to acknowledge what is happening is a threat to that comfort. Ignore them, for they are not the voices that will rise in the coming days, months and years. They are not the voices of our collected humanity.
