Usual Suspects at the top of the 2012 polls
By: CNN Deputy Political Director Paul Steinhauser

Washington (CNN) - Two new polls, but as of now the same old story: Mike Huckabee, Mitt Romney, and Sarah Palin remain the leaders of the pack in hypothetical 2012 GOP presidential nomination matchups.

According to an ABC News-Washington Post survey, 21 percent of Republican or independent leading Republicans say that as of now, Huckabee, the former Arkansas governor and 2008 Republican presidential candidate, is their choice for their party's presidential nomination, with 19 percent supporting Palin, the former Alaska governor and Sen. John McCain's runningmate in the last presidential election, and 17 percent backing Romney, the former Massachusetts governor who also ran for the White House in 2008.

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich was a distant fourth, at nine percent, followed at eight percent by New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, who has repeatedly said he is not going to make a bid for the White House in 2012. Everyone else was in the low single digits.

Don't count on these dead-enders getting far if they are nominated. I'd expect a newcomer to get the nod - they aren't that stupid.

Confirmed, Fox "news" makes you stupid

The ones you are noticing are more terrified than anything else. They are lashing out because they are comfortable; and to acknowledge what is happening is a threat to that comfort. Ignore them, for they are not the voices that will rise in the coming days, months and years. They are not the voices of our collected humanity. They are the old voices of fear and impotence. - Anonymous

The Republicans will panic by mid-to-late-2011 when they realize none of these candidates have the it factor. And you know what? They don't. They're the worst collection of candidates I've seen since, well, the 1996 Republican Primary.

So they'll probably do what they did in 1996 and throw it to some old-timer who's earned it.

RE: Usual Suspects at the top of the 2012 polls
Quite the collection -- most of them a tad scary. I am pleased to see Gingrich so far toward the bottom, and after Palin's self-involved response to the Tucson Massacre I think the bloom is finally off her candidacy. Huckabee is a tricky proposition -- he comes off as entirely likable, just a wonderful guy, but as far as I could tell from the last go-round he is really far-right.

I just hope they all trash each other in the primaries.

I keep this bookmarked, it tells me everything I need to know about Huckabee.......

Jan. 15, 2008

If you need proof that the evangelical agenda is to impose theocracy on the United States, listen to what their standard-bearer, Rev. Mike Huckabee said yesterday:

“[Some of my opponents] do not want to change the Constitution, but I believe it’s a lot easier to change the Constitution than it would be to change the word of the living God, and that’s what we need to do is to amend the Constitution so it’s in God’s standards rather than try to change God’s standards,” Huckabee said, referring to the need for a constitutional human life amendment and an amendment defining marriage as between a man and a woman.

Huckabee often refers to the need to amend the Constitution on these grounds, but he has never so specifically called for the Constitution to be brought within “God’s standards,” which are themselves debated amongst religious scholars.

Someone will need to step up on the republican side. The crowd being talked about in this poll will not bring out the people they need to have any chance of coming close to Obama,

I am totally looking forward to seeing who jumps in, None of the ones mentioned will end up with the nod though I will bet money on it.

Agreed. What I think will be interesting if they pick an "unknown" thinking they will be able to get the votes, and they turn out to be another Palin. Remember, the idea behind Palin as VP was to pull in the PUMA's.

Continual bad news for the republicon state of affairs when one sarah palin is one of their top choices. That's like saying.. "I want a lying, cheating, hatemonger bent on spewing violent rhetoric, dumb as a bag of buzzard crap, to be my leader..'cause I'm too damn stupid to make a better choice."

That's a fairly fragmented field, with different types of pandering going on.

I hope thay all do what those type of people do: double down on the crazy instead of building any coalitions.

Love the political rift within their party along religious lines.

The lack of a quality candidate to run against President Obama severely hurts the GOP's chances in my opinion.
