RG III gets knee surgery
AP

Quote:WASHINGTON (AP) — Robert Griffin III is having surgery on a torn ligament and to determine whether there's any other damage in his ailing right knee.

A person familiar with the situation told The Associated Press that the procedure was expected to last about two hours Wednesday morning. The person said orthopedist James Andrews planned to repair a torn lateral collateral ligament and examine the state of Griffin's ACL.
[....]

The question I have is why does the coach still have a job?

RE: RG III gets knee surgery
I saw the game. I can't believe that Shanahan left him in as long as he did. Agree, Shanahan should have given his walking papers.

At least RGIII is going to the best clinic for his kind of surgery around.

I believe he did, but Shanahan should have said no. It's kind of like a parent-child relationship -- sometimes our kids want to do something, and sometimes, to be a good parent, we have to say no.

Shanahan failed big-time here.

The player almost always asks to play. Sometimes they beg to play. The coaches and the players aren't doctors. Shanahan should have deferred to the doctors first and then used his own good judgement once he saw that Griffin was not able to perform.

I will try to find a link but I heard yesterday that Shanahan has a dubious history about his own playing with an injury.
Edit to add:

Shanahan was injured in 1972 during practice at Eastern Illinois. His kidney was ruptured, he almost died and his QB career was over.

This year he was knocked down and was woozy from a collision during practice. Here is what was reported by the Washington Post at that time and (in bold face) what RG III said about it.

Quote:The team’s trainers tended to the 60-year-old Shanahan, and a cart was brought out to the field. But Shanahan, after being helped up, waved off the cart, and gingerly walked off the field.

Said Griffin: “he showed some toughness. That’s a benchmark for our team.

That is the benchmark said the QB. Is there any reason to expect him to say anything other than "put me in coach, I'm ready to play"?

I heard that too, pappy. And I also heard that the RGIII's doc said he never released him to play.

Good grief! It seems obvious to me that Shanahan and RGIII were looking ONLY at the playoff game and winning, and not thinking one iota about the future of this young man or his health.

I edited the post you replied to above to add what I found about Shanahan's injury history.
