A new America speaks

So much for voter suppression. So much for the enthusiasm gap. So much for the idea that smug, self-appointed arbiters of what is genuinely “American” were going to “take back” the country, as if it had somehow been stolen.

<..> As is often the case, Fox News host Bill O’Reilly was a bit more perceptive: “The white establishment is now the minority,” he said Tuesday evening, before it was clear that Obama would win. “The demographics are changing. It’s not a traditional America anymore.”
No, Bill, it’s not.

African Americans made up a record 13 percent of the electorate in 2008. Many analysts attributed that spike in turnout to the novelty of being able to vote for a black major-party presidential candidate. This year, some pollsters factored into their projections the assumption that the black vote would decline to a more “normal” 11 percent.

<..> On Tuesday, the America of today asserted itself. Four years ago, the presidential election was about Barack Obama and history. This time, it was about us — who we are as a nation — and a multihued, multicultural future.

A new America that has been "old" for many of us that have diversity in our world.

Who knew that you couldn't expect to trash half of the country, call us losers only wanting a hand out, try to set women back 50 years, and still lose?

America has always changed and accepted, all-be-it grudgingly, new cultural influences and people. It has always been in flux demographically.

The fact that for a long time white people dominated the culture and government slowed the assimilation and change but never stopped it. Culturally the left has always been more accepting of change then the right. The left usually looks more disorganized because they accept the new and adapt while the right resists change and obstructs out of fear of the new.

So we are still "traditional". The right continues to obstruct while America continues to change and adapt to new realities. In the future the conservatives (in whatever guise) will still be trying to look like America while America is always one or two steps ahead of them. Come the 22nd century liberal America will be happy to welcome conservative Americans into the 21st century.

Traditional America is defined by change and change is inevitable.

Change is the only constant. Every decade has been different. When the teabaggers wanted to 'take the country back', you have to wonder take it back to what decade, and what were their plans to keep it there?
It must be terrible to live in fear the way they do. How do they cope?
