Mitt Romney's Threat: If He's Not Elected, His Party Will Trash the Economy

Romney made his closing argument today. Basically: If he's not elected, the Republicans in Congress will throw America over the fiscal cliff:

“You know that if the President is re-elected, he will still be unable to work with the people in Congress,” Romney said. “He has ignored them, attacked them, blamed them. The debt ceiling will come up again, and shutdown and default will be threatened, chilling the economy.”

<..> Except, that's not how it works. Threats don't materialize without someone to make the threats. In this case, Romney's party is doing the threatening, which means that Romney, as the face of the Republican party, is making this threat. He's essentially trying to take America's future hostage. This is low, even for Romney.

The GOP is in big trouble.

RE: Mitt Romney's Threat: If He's Not Elected, His Party Will Trash the Economy
It's not hard to see how this will go.

Many of the "Tea Party" in Congress will lose. Now all but more than a few. As true lame ducks they will have zero reason to cooperate to avoid tanking the economy. Positions in the last 2 months of the year will stiffen.

In the Senate it will be much the same story but here it will be even more convoluted since it only takes one Senator to gum up the works. the ultimate make up of the next Senate will also play a role. If Democrats keep the majority they will not feel pressure to cooperate as I think Harry will move to change the filibuster rules and then with the new Senate in place with new rules the Democrats can get what is needed. If Republicans take the Senate then Democrats will be in a hurry to get something through the Senate. The republicans are sure to change the filibuster rules to prevent payback from the Dems. Republicans will be in no mood to work with Dems now knowing they will be in the driver seat in January.

So in the short run, obstruction. In the long run it depends on the makeup of the Senate as the House is unlikely to swing Democratic.

Keep your fingers crossed.

What that means for the economy is not promising

The people are going to vote in a divided government. House: Republican; Senate: Democrat; President: Obama

People are scared to vote for big change the Republican way. We are not going to vote in a CEO who have not held a job in six years. Corruption at the highest levels has always been the problem. That is where the money went.
