I'm going to respond to this because I don't think Mav will.
A lot of you have praised and thanked me, TINS, Craig, azmouse, and Treestar for what we've done to put this forum together. Well, okay, we appreciate that. We have actually put a lot of work into this, along with people like JeffR, Joan, Nance, Cha, KonaKane, Willinois, and a number of others.
But beyond all of that, the only person who has put a financial interest in this is NJMaverick. He bought the URL and the server space, and then he turned it over to all of us to screw up or, hopefully, turn into something worthwhile.
And he should be thanked for it in the highest terms possible.
Accepting donations, though, requires another level of involvement altogether. There are legalities involved in this that make it a less than a simple question. For example, we have RSS feeds on the blog's home page. They are licensed to be there based on our "non-commercial" status. If we accept donations, are we still non-commercial? The problem here is that it would take lawyers to figure that out, and we can't afford lawyers. We'd have to have a fund-raiser just for lawyers so that we could accept donations. That's absurd considering what we are.
Some of you may be saying, "Hey, I go to this or that blog, and they don't worry about this," and you would be correct. They don't. And they may not ever have to worry about infringing on copyrights or whatever, but we're holding ourselves to a higher standard. We want to avoid as much as possible anyone even having a marginal case against what we do here.
NJMaverick is ultimately the one who will have to answer this question, but I wanted to offer a little commentary on it since we've just avoided it before. We all owe a lot to Mav, and we should respect the fact he has essentially turned over ownership of this forum to the people who populate it. Most people wouldn't do that.
