RE: Republicans are finished
It will come down - as it always does - to turnout. Democrats have to get out the vote.
It will be hard for the Democratic Party to hold the Senate and gain control of the HoR; PBO should have no diffuculty defeating Romney, but Congress will be tough.

RE: Republicans are finished
I completely agree with you, Cannae1, about turnout. If the vote is suppressed, Romney/Ryan will steal in and claim they have a "mandate" from the people to dismantle Social Security and Medicare, slash every single program to the bone, award themselves millions in additional tax cuts, and start a ground war with Iran.
I'm not so sure about the conventional wisdom of Dems prevailing in Congress being "tough," however. Polls have started consistently showing a public preference for a Democratic congress by about six points - 49%-43% was one of the last figures I'd seen (wish I could remember where for a link). Now, I know, I know - "I wouldn't trust the polls," however, we are quite near to election time, and public sentiment seems to be locking in -- I think we have a great chance of not only holding the Senate, but of retaking the House.

.... a party of rabid, old, white men in the unhappy dusk of their lives...
Oh my.
But that's not the worst of it. Pick an issue, any issue. The Elephant Party has become the Ostrich Party — burying its head in the sand, refusing to face reality and build bridges to millions of potential supporters. This year's convention was an apotheosis of all the mean-spirited attacks the tea party/Republicans have been waging against women, gays and lesbians, healthcare reform, China, Russia, undocumented immigrants, Iran, Iraq, Social Security, Medicare — without so much as a single, realistic, workable, compassionate solution to attract undecided voters. The GOP today is largely a party of rabid, old, white men in the unhappy dusk of their lives, railing against a nation in which they are no longer the dominant players. It is sad to watch — and sadder to be one of them. You can smell the mothballs of their memories and memorabilia (hats and banners resurrected for the convention), read the rage in their eyes.
Whew! Now that I'm done laughing, I just want to remind us all that THE GOP CHEATS. They know they can't win anymore without cheating, whatever else they want to call it. We must never let our guard down.
Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it's the only thing that ever does. ~Margaret Mead~

DrMouse says take two single Democratic women and call me in the morning... or don't call, that's ok too 'cause I probably don't want the details anyway but that's not to say a call wouldn't be welcome, I like to talk to people, it's just that I'm sayin' you need the comfort of good people so you don't have to worry about being Republican 'cause no one should have to worry about something so heinous especially someone as nice as you, and just be sure to stock up on extra potato chips 'cause the women may enjoy them also and since chips can be salty, you might get thirsty so don't forget to pick up some DrPepper when you go to the store to buy chips.
OMG are you trying to get me to an early grave? In my twenties I could have handled two single Democratic women but now in the "dusk" years I would have trouble with two Republican women. I take that back, just the thought of two Republican women any where near me is too disturbing to contemplate.
Thanks for the prescription though. I will consider it but I may have to reduce the dosage. Everything in moderation you know!

I know some of them. Not every old white man is like this, of course, we've got our own DFPers who may fit that demographic.
But my dad's friends, many of them, are like that. (Dad himself is not all that bad, he's a liberal but also Catholic and obsessed with the abortion issue). And the thing is, these guys did well. They ought to be happy. They came of age in the 50s - no college debt - maybe it cost to go but they didn't graduate with debt. They got jobs that supported families and non-working wives.
They all have good retirement plans. They bought houses in the 60s now worth a lot more than when they bought them. They go on trips. They have trailers and places at the beach.
They have nothing to complain about and yet are so angry at the government, the world, and everyone who has a lot less than they do and a lot less opportunity.
