(Reuters) - The Macau government has launched an official investigation into Sands China, owned by billionaire Sheldon Adelson, after the company transferred documents linked to a wrongful dismissal case to the United States from Macau.

It is the latest twist in a saga that has become a firestorm for the casino mogul, who owns casinos in Las Vegas, Macau and Singapore and is the most active donor in U.S. Republican candidate Mitt Romney's presidential campaign.

Adelson's lawyers are due to face an August 30 hearing in the United States, where District Court Judge Elizabeth Gonzales will decide whether Las Vegas Sands Corp withheld financial documents in a case in which the 78-year-old is accused of having personally approved of prostitution at the company's casino in China's special administrative region of Macau.

<..> The charges cast a harsh light on Adelson, the largest individual donor to U.S. Republican candidates in 2012 campaigns. Adelson and his wife recently gave $10 million to the Restore Our Future, a super PAC to support Romney's presidential bid.

Adelson should be the subject of some ads showing Willard's money machine. He's dirty and getting dirtier.

If the Chinese act quickly enough, a few well-placed ads about who one of Romney's major financiers is will have devastating effect. The Republicans will scream about how China is meddling in our election, and we can zap them right back that the Republicans are claiming we suddenly have control over China's actions, something no one has ever managed to do before.

The Obama campaign is quick-witted enough, but do you think the Chinese will be that "helpful"? Mr and Mrs Adelson are certainly a slimy pair.

Actually, they might be.

The Chinese are master planners, usually take action that implies a lot of forward thinking. They are also the consummate gamblers, and if they check the odds, they know that Obama's re-election is looking rather solid for the moment. Adelson is not a good long-term bet for them, and they will construct their foreign policy on a long-term relationship with the Obama administration rather than pleasing an American casino magnate just because he has big interests in Macau. If he gets too "uppity," all they have to do is nationalize the casinos on Macau, compensate Adelson as they see fit and tell him Adios (or, Sai-Jien, if you prefer). What's Adelson going to do, sic Blackwater on the Chinese army?
