GOP Inaction Leads to United States Postal Service Default
Quote:Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today after House Republican inaction led to the U.S. Postal Service’s first default in its history. Earlier in April, the Senate passed a bipartisan postal reform bill to keep the post office open and prevent it from defaulting; however, House Republicans refused to act on this legislation or even bring it up for a vote:

“Today, House Republicans have irresponsibly set into motion the default of the United States Postal Service for the first time in history.

“To manufacture yet another crisis, the Republican leadership refused to allow consideration of postal reform legislation that passed the Senate with a strong bipartisan majority months ago and that would have easily prevented a default. Instead, Republicans have shown no interest in offering meaningful solutions – including a path to address the Postal Service’s unique requirement to prepay retiree health benefits.

“Millions of Americans rely on the Post Office as a lifeline – keeping senior citizens connected, ensuring services to rural areas, delivering vital medicines, and facilitating our nation’s commerce. Democrats strongly support the survival and viability of the Post Office, and we call on the House Republican leadership to bring up the bipartisan Senate postal reform legislation without further delay.”

At least they're consistent. Everything for the 1%, nothing for the 99%.

This was a calculated effort by the GOP to destroy the USPS.

In the wee morning hours of December 8, 2006, the last day of the lame duck Session, the Senate concluded its legislative business with ‘unanimous consent’ adoption of the Postal Accountability and Enhancement Act (PAEA - HR 6407) without any debate or roll call vote.

The Act requires that a $5.8 billion check be written each Sept. 30th to the U.S. Treasury for the next ten years to be deposited into a prepaid health fund for future retirees 75 years in advance! No other Federal agency has such a requirement and without this onerous health fund obligation, the USPS would have been a profit-making agency for the last four years.

I couldn't agree more. They want to jump off and cliff and think it will help the country...well...if this is their cliff I think they are right because this issue would show everyone the results their policies would bring.

I certainly wouldn't want to be on the receiving end of angry granny that didn't get her weekly TV Guide or National Enquirer.

Not to mention her Social Security check!

Maybe this will wake up the seniors who are supporting the GOP. For some reason some of them think they are safe, and they're not. That medicare voucher won't pay their medical bills. Anyone getting help from medicaid would lose it. They have been led down the primrose path and it's time they see the light.

A "boondoggle" that has worked just fine since 1775.

Let's see. I still get bills in the mail (haven't gone completely paperless), DMV bills/stickers for my car. Catalogs. Jury Duty notice. My Obama2012 car magnet came yesterday. Many small businesses ship their products via USPS. Our company gets CHECKS from clients in the mail.

Just yesterday I got my yearly reminder from the local BOE of my polling place, ward number, etc. through normal mail delivery.
