Voter ID = Poll tax
TPM is reporting on statements by Holder to the NAACP today.

Quote:Attorney General Eric Holder deviated from his prepared remarks during a speech before the NAACP on Tuesday and called voter ID laws “poll taxes.”

“Under the proposed law, concealed handgun licenses would be acceptable forms of photo ID, but student IDs would not,” Holder said. “Many of those without IDs would have to travel great distances to get them, and some would struggle to pay for the documents they might need to obtain them. We call those poll taxes.”

<....>
The NAACP passed an emergency resolution supporting Holder, who has been under attack by Republicans for his handling of the investigation of the botched ATF operation known as Fast and Furious.

A video of his remarks is available at the link.

Good for Holder calling it what it is.

I wonder if this is more than an idle remark. Could it be a signal that Justice is considering court action against the states that have new voter requirements?

That would be the thing to do and I hope you're on to something.

RE: Voter ID = Poll tax
A poll tax is a good term for it. Before, if you didn't have a photo ID, a recent utility bill, library card, or 2 documents showing your name and address were good enough. Those were free. Now, it has to be a gov't-issued photo ID, normally a driver's license, which costs money.

I hope the DOJ makes haste against these obvious attempts at voter suppression.
