Romney Tells Inane Lie About Post Office, No One Notices

n all the furor that gripped the country over Wawagate, I almost missed this tidbit from James Fallows, who despite being a national treasure and one of America's finest journalists is subjecting himself to the indignity of traveling with Mitt Romney's campaign. Apparently, on the stump yesterday Mitt described how "a doctor told him that he had to fill out a 33-page change-of-address form, several times, to get the post office to send his mail—including reimbursement checks—to his new location. That is what happens with government-run organizations where you have 'no competition.'"

Aargh. You want to talk disconnected? Forget the Wawa, this shows just how clueless Mitt Romney is, or perhaps just how stupid he thinks the rest of us are. Have you ever changed your address? You probably have. Did you have to fill out a 33-page form? Of course you didn't. The form to change your address is a friggin' postcard. Old address, new address, when you want the change to happen. Done. You can do it online now, and it'll take about 2 minutes. Yet Mitt Romney gets up in front of a crowd of people and tells them that government is so awful, at the Post Office you have to fill out a 33-page form to change your address.

Out of touch? What does Willard really do that involves the rest of the people in this country?

They really have no idea what would happen without a streamlined mail delivery system that is guaranteed to go to every location in the country. Unbelievable idiots. Beyond the 33 page change of address blatant lie. I just changed my address 4 months ago. I did it online I think. It was so simple I don't even remember it.

It's easy to see what types he's trying to appeal to.
I expect him to show up for a stump speech soon with a confederate flag gimmee hat chewing a piece of straw.

RE: Romney Tells Inane Lie About Post Office, No One Notices
I'm going to give this one a mostly false.

Mitt is out of touch but I think he also doesn't understand how things really work. When you have had someone to handle the "details" all your life you don't have to bother your "beautiful mind" with things as mundane as change of address.

As anyone knows the Post Office paperwork for change of address is extremely short and easy but the post office only forwards mail from an old address to the new one for a limited period. Before that time it is up to the individual to notify others of the new address. Further, with many businesses that rely on the Post Office to deliver checks and other financial documents things get a little more complex and detailed.

Especially when it comes to checks the mailing is often labeled "Do Not Forward" so that the checks cannot be deliberately misdirected. In cases like that the companies require that you contact them directly with the change so it can be verified.

In this case I think the doctor that Mitt was talking about probably had to fill out forms with 33 different companies (insurers, hospital, etc) to ensure that their mailings got to him. Romney either couldn't get the difference or simply didn't care so he told the story as he understood it and in a way that furthered his spin.

It's kind of amazing these days. They do this all automatically now, or something. I have my accounts changed and I didn't even notify them. I don't know exactly how it's done, if business subscribe or something, but it's done. Perhaps there are extra forms somewhere along the line that I could have filled out to guarantee certain changes - but I didn't and everything comes straight to me now. The only thing I definitely remember having a problem with is buying stuff online, if you forget to change your online address so it doesn't match your credit card addess, there will be problems. Luckily some friends moved into our old house so if anything goes there, they just bring it to us. That's only happened a couple times though. The process is very smooth, as far as the post office itself goes.

The doctor also may have had to fill out separate changes of address for UPS< FedEx, DHL, and all those other competing delivery companies... which is kind of ironic considering the idiocy of the complaint. Let's have MORE delivery companies so we have MORE changes of address to blame on the USPS.

I have to disagree.

The far right (rabid, antigovernment Teabaggers) are tepid at best about Romney.

I think his team specifically fed him this crap to spew.

He's just riding the wave of the Tea Party and Scott Walker on this: your friendly, hard-working mail carrier is transformed into a jackbooted public sector thug sucking at the taxpayer's teat.

Your absolutely right and I should have included that as a possible scenario, deliberate obfuscation, otherwise known as pulling it out of one's ass. I still lean to the possibility that Mitt is such an empty suit that he cannot grasp the details of life of everyday human existence. Why do "The Coneheads" come to mind.

Guess Mittwit believes everything he is told. The doctor was lying or being disingenuous.

We have to start pushing the Reporters
to tell Romeny to put up or shut up. Identify the guy that says he had the issue...

he won't because he can't....he made the shit up.

Ron Chusid has the story. It was a 33 page change of address for Medicaid reimbursement, that the doctor did wrong.. twice.
