snollygoster

A politician who will go to any lengths to win public office, regardless of party affiliation or platform.

<..> According to Vintage Vocabulary, President Harry Truman revived its use in 1952. Talking about politicians who like to make a show of public prayer, he said, “I wish some of these snollygosters would read the New Testament and perform accordingly.”

<..> A related term is carpetbagger.

That's a new word for me. But I can see that it would apply to Willard. Big Grin

RE: snollygoster
Much as I like finds like "snollygoster" I'm thinking this new century with new excesses is going to create a whole new lexicon of nasty, snide and funny words for those excesses.

After all, wouldn't a snollygoster just as easily be called an "etch-a-sketcher"?

BTW snollygoster shows up in my iPad browser spell checker.
