Well, no they don't, of course. They perform a vital service and do damn dangerous work. They have my utmost respect. But if you are a loyal Republican these days, the memo has been sent. The memo that tells you the enemy of the day is - firefighters.
No shit.
Let's recall, clear back in the beginning of September 2001. In the wake of the terror attacks, our media was awash with heroic photos of brave firefighters in midst of the awful work helping us dig out of the worst attack on our nation's soil, ever. Silhouettes of the guys in the familiar hats, shrouded in smoke and debris dust as they pulled the injured and the dead from the rubble. One or two as they held the deceased bodies of victims, heads hung in grief. Back then, the firefighter was on par with the American flag. You didn't want to mess with either.
But recently, GOP designated loser Mitt Romney got it into his head that those firefighters are just parasites. A boil on the ass of society. Why? Because they get paid by public monies, and have pensions and stuff. Unforgivable crimes. Slackers! Jobs to be cut like the unfortunate recipients of the mountain of pink slips distributed by Bain Capital.
It's a scary thing to watch these days, how fast GOP marching orders are given and so quickly obeyed by the willing sheep of this wayward party. No sooner had the White Horse Prophecy presidential candidate uttered his disdain about firefighters, than all over blogs, forums and letters to the editors around the nation began erupting with puzzling defamations and slurs aimed at those who risk their lives to make sure ours don't perish in flames.
Maybe this is just more of the late assault on anything-that-benefits-America from the rightist loons who have taken over the conservative side. Throw that on the fire stoked to crash the economy just to benefit the GOP. Or, booing gay veterans. Or cheering the idea that someone without health insurance should just crawl out and die on the street.
It looks damn inhospitable these days, this conservative view of America. Woe to you who's house may catch fire. I wonder if, in the flaying hatred displayed to vital public service personel, the GOP is completely blind to the flames licking at their own.
