Why Are Democrats Losing the Wisconsin Recall?

Republicans are confident controversial Gov. Scott Walker will survive next week's attempt to oust him, while Democrats insist it's too soon to predict the outcome.

The battle over Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, raging for the last 15 months, finally comes to a head next week with the recall election that could oust him from the statehouse. But Republicans seem very, very sure that won't happen.

In the final days before Tuesday's vote on whether to retain Walker or replace him with Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett, Republicans are crowing as if they've already won, while Democrats strain to insist they're still in it.

So confident is the GOP of a Walker victory in Tuesday's vote that national Republicans are looking to raise the stakes. "If Walker wins next Tuesday, and we're confident he will, Obama is going to have a much tougher road ahead in Wisconsin this fall," Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus -- a former Wisconsin Republican Party chairman -- told reporters on a conference call Wednesday.

The gelling conventional wisdom that Walker is set to triumph was bolstered by a Marquette Law School poll released Wednesday afternoon that showed Walker ahead by 7 percentage points. The independent poll, conducted May 23-26, put Walker at 52 percent of the vote to Barrett's 45 percent, outside the 4.1-point margin of error. And you couldn't really argue that the poll was slanted toward the GOP: It also showed President Obama leading Mitt Romney, 51 percent to 43 percent.

I just want the people in Wisconsin to know that they bought your state and are now doing a victory dance nearly a week before voting even takes place.

Republicans must feel confident in their abilities to rig the voting machines.

One way for the Democrats to overcome that is to vote in record numbers. I think they will.

I think it has to do with trying to make democrats discouraged enough to stay home and not vote. The MSM seems to be doing a great job of painting Walker as "ahead" in the polls, even though they seem to quote only the polls that do have him ahead and none of the ones that say it's a tie, or have Walker behind.

It's an old republican ploy to try and make democrats think it's all a lost cause so why vote. This time I don't think that is going to happen. What it will come down to is getting out the voters, and from what I have seen over the last year is that voters are not happy with Walker, they have shown that by their protests, and since Walker has pissed off a whole lot of voting groups, I think the whole idea he is ahead is simply more right wing BS with the only goal being to HOPE like hell democrats stay home.

Bingo... If they can get Madison and Milwaukee (Green Bay is hopelessly red) out in full throated roars ... Walker will be "walking" the path of shame out of the state house.

Wisconsin like Iowa is red in its rural areas and the deepest of deep blues in its cities (out side of Sioux City in the west in Iowa)

Don't understand it either..because you would think small town people who are so up against it would not be voting republican..but the repubs and the NRA have been active on the local levels.

The NRA is our next door neighbor who has been sold a bill of goods.. and can't see it.

I never have figured out why so many people vote republican. I know there is a die hard base that will only vote for whoever has the R in front of their name, but so many others who vote for them are actually doing more harm to themselves, and that I just will never understand.

It always comes down to getting the votes out on election day. I seem to recall a post on a board after the 2010 elections, after Walker started his far right radical agenda, that something like 800,000 voters who voted in 2008 didn't vote in 2010. The poster also stated that Walker only won by a small margin and if only a fraction of those who did not vote "would" have gotten out and done so, Walker would have lost. I think many states that ended up with republicans taking over and then going super radical to try and destroy unions, public employees, vets, seniors, etc. also had a low turn out of voters. I would think that the people who didn't bother to vote in 2010 would have learned a lesson, and will turn out in huge numbers this time.

As I said before, it's the MSM that is doing all they can to convince people it's a lost cause and hope they stay home. I just hope that it all backfires on Walker and he goes down in flames!

The Koch money is speaking loudly these last days before the vote. They are doing all they can to discourage Democrats.
Absentee voting is huge and I bet voter turnout will be too on June 5th.
