Romney's car elevator cost $55,000
By MAGGIE HABERMAN |

From the Department of Unhelpful News Items comes this local TV report on Mitt Romney's La Jolla home and the car elevator he's building:

"The nice thing about this is that at the grade level it looks like a regular garage floor," said Cheryl Nauman, an employee at American Custom Lifts. "When you hit a button, another comes up."

<..> "For the cost of the lift, delivery and installed… it's about $55,000," Davies said.

You mean when he rolls up the sleeves of his perfectly starched white $750 shirts and stands around in his pressed jeans, you're not convinced that he's one of us?

What is a car elevator? What is it even for? So Rmoney's servants can work on the car? Dunce

It is basically the same thing as the lifts they use in automotive repair shops. They are advertised in automotive magazines. Usually they lift one car off the ground for either service or to be able to put another car underneath so two cars can be stored in the space of one.

The one Romney is getting works in reverse. You drive a car onto it and lower it into a hole below the floor. The top of the "elevator" is a plate that then covers the hole in the floor to hide the opening and allowing another car to be driven onto it.

From what I saw on TV, it you don't know the lift is there you'd probably never figure out a car could be under the floor. Good idea for securing a valuable car from damage or theft.

Thanks for the explanation! That must be one valuable car to need to hide its existence like that - as if anyone will be breaking into the Rmoney household to steal cars - they've probably got all kinds of security too.

I'm guessing it is more for space than security. This would allow you, for instance, to store 6 cars in a 3 car garage.

Although, if he owns any collectible cars they can be worth hundreds of thousands or even a few millions of dollars. I doubt they'd be stolen but you would probably want to protect them from accidental damage, you know how hard it is to get good reliable help these days.

Heck if you're that rich, you'd have enough land for a simple 6 car garage. :face palm:

And you have to move the upper car to get to the de-elevated car! What an inconvenience! roflmao

Not if you have enough head room. Of course if you have enough headroom to lift something like a Miata but then put a Range Rover up there you might trash the Range Rover.
