The distinction between entrapment (which is illegal) and a sting (which is legal) now appears to be a much eroded line in the sand. As Perlstein’s piece points out, it is up to a jury once arrests have been made whether law enforcement set up a trap or a sting. In previous decades, defendants have been acquitted in cases of entrapment; but not in recent years:

Not a single “terrorism” indictment has been thrown out for entrapment since 9/11 – not the Liberty City goofballs supposedly planning to blow up the Sears Tower who had no weapons and refused them when offered; not the Newburgh, New York outfit whose numbers included a schizophrenic who saved his own urine in bottles. (Even the judge who sentenced them said “the government made them terrorists.”)

This looks very much like a cross between Follow The Money and Who We Don't Like...Today, with nice This Is A Police State crust. The writer notes the Liberty City case, where the "terrorists" would have trouble organizing an After Work Happy Hour get-together, much less an actual attack on the Sears Tower. However, they were all black and they're supposed to be in jail anyway. Actual white supremist groups with violent tendencies are just a bunch of beer-drinkers that wear fatigues and go shoot assault rifles in the woods on weekends. The racist and corporate tendencies of law enforcement are put on display.

Because the FBI was created to harass the radical left. It's no surprise that the institutional bias is still in that direction.

There was the raid of the Christian militia group in Michigan, Indiana and Ohio. But, that's rare.

The problem is that there's a ton of money floating around to fight terrorism and very few domestic terrorists. They have to use the money and manpower somehow. People under pressure to produce results will either find terrorists or create them. This is why homeland security money needs to be reduced and redirected.

I am not about to defend their ways. Trying to by C4 to blow up a bridge deserves an arrest.

As said in the article: “the alleged terrorist masterminds end up seeming, when the full story comes out, unable to terrorize their way out of a paper bag without law enforcement tutelage.”

I don't have a problem with them being arrested for actually attempting to commit a crime. I do have a problem with the fact that a bunch of keyboard kommandos were assisted (entrapped) by a paid law-enforcement informant while actual terrorists with actual competency are overlooked just because they're not anti-capitalists.

They use the exact same precise techniques to arrest the myriad islamic/muslim/jihadi/whateverthefuck bombers all over the country. Dumbasses of any persuasion should not be cohorting with individuals who promise and have the ability to get C4. Period. Full stop. If red flags don't go up when someone tells you they can get C4, you need a new personal warning system.

However, the FBI should be sending *somebody* to the parental home of anybody under the age of 21 because it's not right to ruin the life of a disturbed young adult who will likely grow up and put life in perspective. We used to know that in this country.
