Oh Mittens, you better check with the RNC about the Publican view on basic research (which is what you advocating here).

Quote:January 25, 2011 — Last week’s proposal from a group of Republicans in the House of Representatives to slash federal spending by more than $2 trillion over 10 years includes a proposal to cut back funding for applied research at the Department of Energy (DOE) by $1.27 billion annually — a move that could strip away federal funds for research on an array of energy-related projects, and potentially make it harder for new technologies to reach the marketplace.

The liquefied coal-to-gas technology he's talking about was one of the solutions for "energy independence" Bush/Cheney advocated. Hitler did it late in the war as an act of desperation when their oil supplies were cut off. South Africa did the same when the international community isolated them over apartheid.
It's a huge waste of money that's not supported by anyone other than coal industry CEO's and their crony politicians.

As it takes more energy input to get usuable liquid hydrocarbons out of coal than you end up with, unless technology makes a huge leap forward converting coal to transport fuel is a loser...except for coal companies.
