Phoenix school balks over having to face girl in Arizona title game
I feel terrible for this young woman, and very proud of her and her teammates.

Quote:All second baseman Paige Sultzbach wanted to do was play in her school's state championship baseball game tonight.

But because she is a girl, that won't happen.

Sultzbach is a freshman at Mesa Preparatory Academy, which had been scheduled to play Our Lady of Sorrows Academy in tonight's Arizona Charter Athletic Association state championship at Phoenix College.

But Our Lady of Sorrows, a fundamentalist Catholic school in Phoenix that lost twice to Mesa Prep during the regular season, chose to forfeit the championship game rather than play a team fielding a female player.

Our Lady of Sorrows school officials would not comment, but Sultzbach's mother, Pamela Sultzbach, said her daughter and the rest of the team received the news after Wednesday afternoon's practice.

"This is not a contact sport, it shouldn't be an issue," Pamela said. "It wasn't that they were afraid they were going to hurt or injure her, it's that (they believe) that a girl's place is not on a field."

What the hell is "a fundamentalist Catholic school"? Are catholics fundies too? Does the pope know?

I feel sorry for the girl and her team too, denied the right to play the game and beat the pants off the offending opponent.

This group disagrees with the reforms of Vatican II. Very, very regressive and anti-female so it shouldn't be too surprising they would dislike a female on the opposing team.

Oh great....THOSE idiots. They are just to the left of Opus Dei, they want the mass read in Latin only, again, and the priest to have his back to the congregation.

They stumbled right out of a time machine.

No one wants to forfeit a game, esp. the championship final.

If Our Lady of Sorrows doesn't like the league rules, they can start their own league. I suggest the "League of the Inquisition" as a title.

Baseball?? They don't want to play a girl in BASEBALL?????

Oh good grief.

Reminds me of the article a while back where some nimwit wanted the girls to wear some kind of skirt thing to play sports.

And no, there is no such thing as fundamentalist Catholicism. The least of my complaints of the Catholic Church is Latin and what direction the Priest faces. The inability to treat all members of the congregration equally is of far more importance.

The whole thing gives me a headache.

The Catholic church never did, by doctrine, treat all in the congregation equally. That's why there is a Eucharist.
