Top Republican Strategist Denies Women Are Paid Less Than Men
By Igor Volsky on Apr 29, 2012 at 11:54 am

his morning, during a heated discussion with Rachel Maddow on Meet The Press, GOP consultant Alex Castellanos denied that women make 77 cents for a man’s dollar in the workplace and noted, “there are lots of reasons for that.” Maddow expressed shock at the assertion, but concluded that it explained why Republicans and Mitt Romney are so hesitant to embrace the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act of 2009, a law that helps women hold accountable employers who discriminate in the pay practices based on gender.

“Now we know, at least from both of your perspectives,” Maddow said, pointing to Castellanos and Romney surrogate Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA), “women are not fairing worse than men in the economy that women aren’t getting paid less for equal work.” “It’s about policy and whether or not you want to fix some of the structural discrimination that women really do face that Republicans don’t believe is happening,” she added. Castellanos responded to Maddow’s policy argument by remarking on her passion, to which the MSNBC host took offense:

Castellanos kept talking over Rachel so what she said wouldn't come across to the viewers. Typical repub tactic, but it didn't work. She is right, he was condescending and kept smiling like he was allowing her to have an opinion. I bet she wanted to smack him.

That was a priceless exchange, glad I caught it.

Look for Rachel to all but call Castellanos a liar on her show Monday. To use Harry Truman's line, "I just tell the truth about them and they think it's Hell." She'll tell the truth, present the facts and then invite him on to argue those facts. His reply will be, "____________________________"!

I hope she didn't get whiplash as her head snapped back and forth between Castellanos and McMorris Rodgers when they both claimed that women are actually doing better than men in the workplace.

What a condescending, paternalistic attitude that asshole has.

"Oh, look how cute the passion is coming from the girlie" he may as well have said, with his smirk and his lifty holier than thou raised eyebrows. It's a good thing I'm never in the studio with these pieces of shit, I'd go to jail for assault.

All I know is that that piece of video will
be used against the Republicans. Rachel won that exchange today and for the rest of the year.

He basically implied women were not smart enough to figure out they are getting screwed when it comes to pay equality. The Repug woman looked like an idiot sitting their grinning while he was talking shit.

That Repug woman is unfortunately a representative from my beautiful state of Washington. But one good thing -- she doesn't represent my district!

She might represent mine. I better look it up but she doesn't look familiar!

Ugh! Your district just can't win can they?

I'm lucky -- McDermott is my rep. Maybe you should move! Smile

RE: Top Republican Strategist Denies Women Are Paid Less Than Men
Women actually do face two issues when it comes to wages. One is plain old discrimination in the form of salaries and promotions. Why anybody tries to deny that is beyond me.

But the other, that these GOPers try to defend, is the disparity that happens due to motherhood. Yes women who work an hourly wage might make less in a week because she doesn't get paid when her kids are sick or she takes off an hour early for a conference or to carry them around to various activities. Or maybe she took time off her career to have children. Motherhood should be valued in this society. There shouldn't be any question that parenting provides valuable skills that you can't learn anywhere else. Men can't keep walking away from parental responsibility and then have other men reward that behavior with bigger paychecks. And then when the dad does have custody of his kids, he gets rewarded monetarily because it's single dads are so rare. Granted it isn't that way in all cases, my son's child support is $466 a month, based on a minimum wage job. But when he does get work, he'll likely move into a wage higher than his ex-girlfriend who has been at the same job 5 years. That's the part a lot of men, and apparently the entirety of the GOP, miss.

RE: Top Republican Strategist Denies Women Are Paid Less Than Men
Rachel Maddow is just too smart for that pompous blithering idiot. He doesn't even exist on the same mental plane. She should have whacked him across the head with a heavy ruler. The insanity was that he honestly didn't look like he thought she had the brains to understand what he was talking about. And the problem is he will never be smart enough to figure out that he's wrong about Rachel, and he more than likely doesn't even know what equal pay for equal work even means. She is one of the smartest people on the planet.

RE: Top Republican Strategist Denies Women Are Paid Less Than Men
"Every greedy business man in America would hire women and pay them 25% less." Hellooooo?????? That's exactly what happens when women entered a profession or industry in large numbers.

Men are in fields like engineering, the sciences. Helloooooo????? Those are higher paid fields because men do that work, just like janitorial was higher paid than secretarial because men did that work. The work women do is paid less for the simple fact that women do it.

Castellanos is a pig fucker.
He's been the creator of GOP attack ads for years. (including the famous "Subliminal Rats" ad against Gore)

He also shilled for BP after the Deepwater Horizon catastrophe.

He is paid to disseminate lies and deny reality.

Excellent reminder of how filthy the Republicans behave. They do so many dirty things it's easy to forget some of them.

The good part of this is that Mr. Paternal was caught on camera, for all to see. Anybody with half a brain would be incensed over his ridiculous attitude.

Even though he was a pompous condescending ass hole, Rachel easily handed him his ass on a platter.

Confirmed, Fox "news" makes you stupid

Ever heard a man asked how they manage to juggle work and family?

I was born a Truman, but you can call me Pat. Wave

I know, right? He started to say women want flexibility. Well hello, that's because the men won't do their fair share! I really wish Rachel would let him ramble on and then ask him just who the hell took time away from a career to raise his dumbass. And wasn't her work just as important as his bloviating political career.

Is he for real? That was a poor excuse for a poor job. Rolleyes

Cherry-picking the facts, as usual. Though the facts he cited were accurate, he still couldn't dispel the fact that on average women are paid less than men for the same job.

Like most of the rabid RW liars, he says that everyone's equal and treated fairly, blah, blah, blah. The part that they like to leave out is that THEY are more equal than everybody else.
