When did he say that? We're getting ready to move and we don't have Comedy Central anymore so I don't get to see Stephen (or Jon).
If that's what happened that's funny...Stewart has always maintained he shouldnt be held to journalistic standards because "it's a comedy show that airs before puppets!!!" But...he had no problem with the president appearing on his show in 2010.

You may wish you watch for yourself - Newt/Romney get the brunt of his criticisms, Obama got off with a light joke and a "appear with us" line clearly showing that he is joking and is pretending like he's jealous that Obama would go on Fallon.
I think DI missed the point.

I don't know, DI - seems like that was a bit tongue-in-cheek on Stewart's part. Although, admittedly, I've soured just a bit on Stewart the past couple years - but, in Obama's latest Rolling Stone interview, Obama is quoted as saying he thinks Stewart is brilliant - so, we'll probably see him on there again.

It's not about taking him literally. He insists it was beneath the office to go on Fallon and have some fun, and yet, he would have no problem bringing Obama on his own show. It's a ridiculous double-standard. Attack the President for having some fun on another show and welcome him with open arms when he decides to come on your show - which he did in 2010. Is Stewart's show any better than Fallon's? No. Of course not. Even Stewart admits he's not to be taken seriously. His show is on Comedy Central, which hosts shows like South Park and Tosh.0 - hardly stimulating discussion.
I guess I just tire of these needless attacks. Stewart has a history of making a bigger issue out of something that really shouldn't be an issue. Really, though, Obama can't win. It's sad. It really is fucking sad. Obama refuses to go on any of these shows, and acts presidential, and he's called out of touch. He goes on these shows, has a little fun, and now he's called unpresidential. Fuck that. Stewart shouldn't be pushing a right-wing talking point, especially when he'd kiss a billion asses to land Obama again on his own program.
So, the point still stands: I hope Obama refuses to go The Daily Show this election cycle. Let Mitt Romney go chuck it up with Stewart and Obama should go enjoy himself on The Colbert Report.

I understand your point because I don't think Stewart has ever had the President do a "bit". They have always been straight-up interviews, with some humor thrown in. More like the BoBoBrian tweet, which was really funny because Obama made it funny. Still, I think Stewart was not really digging at the President, but more laughing "with" him. Maybe it didn't come off as light-hearted as I think it was meant.

You make sense. I actually watched the segment.
He teases Newt for about 30 seconds.
He then taunts Romney for 2 full minutes, implying that's he's a robot, among other things.
Then he lightheartedly RIBS Obama for going on Fallon (for about 1 minute) and THIS is what we're obsessing about here?
Please - it's humor.

(04-27-2012 02:43 PM)KonaKane Wrote: This sounds eerily similar to the Krugman and Carter bashing. Don't you see a pattern here yet DI?
Yup! Thank you for pointing it out. Liberals have this incredible need to show the world that they're not biased. So, they say and do things that undermine the President at every turn. Stewart could be joking and I get its his bit sometimes - but the joke plays right into the same bullshit Republican narrative we've heard since his appearance on Fallon. You know, that Obama acted ridiculous and should be mocked for having a little fun.
Like I said, he can't win. He does nothing and he's a stiff who's out of touch and then when he opens up and has a little fun, it's remarkably unpresidential. As if past presidents haven't, you know, had some fun in an election season.
So, yeah, I agree. There is a pattern and I don't like it - especially in an election season. Maybe I'm touchy, but I guess when the Republicans constantly pile on the President for shit like this, I expect Stewart to not follow their lead. Especially when he sees no problem with him coming on his own show - which, IMO, is no more serious, regardless if they're having a serious discussion, than Fallon.
But because Obama somehow slow jammed the news, he was unpresidential. Forget the message he was trying to push, Stewart and the Republicans ignore that, we'll focus on the fact he's doing something different than other presidents in the past.
You know, I was checking out the twitter response during the show and Stewart's reaction was the exact same reaction Michelle Malkin tweeted out to her followers. That about sums it up for me.

If that were the case, they'd never say anything.
No. They shouldn't use Republican talking points. Malkin and Rove and Romney and the Republicans have all pretty much said what Stewart said the other night.
Sadly, I guess he agrees with them.

Uhm, they often use rethug talking points to make fun of them, DI. I seriously doubt that John Stewart became a top GOP operative overnight. Most seem to think his comment about Obama's TV appearance as "tongue in cheek".
Then again, as a society we seem to be losing our ability to parse sarcasm and that sort of wit, and things have to be absolutely literal to be understood.

I never said he was a GOP operative. But it doesn't mean he's not using the same line of attack. I've watched that bit a few times now and I don't sense Stewart was being sarcastic.

Thus far, I think of John as a kind of Professional Leftists. President Obama, like President Clinton, knows these things will help with the youth vote. No older person will change their vote because of it - anyone older person who thinks it is not "presidential" is likely to be a Republican anyway.
I put this in that category for ODS, like the same people who complain that Obama bowed to the Japanese emperor or didn't like his gift of movies to the queen. There's no reason to even comment on these things unless it is meant as a personal attack about the President's personal qualities, which is stupid anyway - or well maybe, an attack on his strengths.
That's how I see it. Thank you. Jon is a good guy who sometimes has to resort to stupid attacks to get a laugh. I don't like it. I think I'd be less irritated by it if Obama wasn't criticized by the right-wing every time he does something - whether it's golfing, going on vacation or doing Fallon.
I get Stewart is trying to go for the cheap laugh. But it shouldn't come at the expense of using a Republican talking point. Especially when Jon has VIPs all the time on his show, specifically presidents, vice presidents, governors, senators, congresspeople and everything and anything you can think of in the political world. A lot of those interviews aren't hard hitting and mostly gentle back and forth, with some comedy sprinkled in.
I guess my biggest problem here is that Obama was actually talking about an important issue. But that's lost because he had some fun with it. Instead of focusing on the issue, advocating for that issue, knowing who his viewers are (you know, people actually impacted by the issue), instead, he finds a reason to needlessly attack Obama.
