Liberty U Students Upset By Romney's Invitation--Because School Has Taught Them Mormons Aren't Christian

Mitt Romney may indeed have a "Mormon problem" after all. At least, he will if the Republican base has anything to say about it:

Liberty University students and alumni are accusing the Christian school of violating its own teachings by asking Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints whose adherents are called Mormons, to deliver its 2012 commencement address.

By Friday morning, more than 700 comments had been posted on the school's Facebook page about the Thursday announcement - a majority of them decidedly against the Chancellor Jerry Falwell Jr.’s invitation, citing that the school had taught them Mormonism isn’t part of the Christian faith.

<..> Liberty University counters with the argument that it has, for past commencements, even invited Jews andCatholics to speak, so it's not like this is the first time they've invited a member of the hellbound to come say some nice platitudes to their students. So there ya go. I think that passes for tolerance, in the Liberty U. sense of the word.

The teachings coming back to bite them. You can't preach intolerance and expect people to put it aside when it's politically motivated. Those students would be better off at a university that isn't religious, where hate isn't taught.

Will the evangelicals really support Willard at the polls in Nov?

The proverbial chickens come home to roost. The second it sunk in that Romney would be the elephant's nominee, I saw the storm clouds of religious division in their party form around him.

Stay tuned, it's about to get a lot more interesting.

I think Romney's religion is going to be an issue for many on the right, and I waiting for that moment when on the campaign trail someone from the audience asks him about it and how he handles it. I suspect he'll try to brush it off which will probably make it worse - and of course he'll blame Obama.

Exactly. Another delicious irony is that Rmoney is as phony a "devout Mormon" as he is in his other views.

That's the truth! They teach these kids that Mormons aren't Christians and are a cult but now that the Republican nominee is a Mormon they want these brainwashed kids to forget all the hate they've been taught?

And it just shows that these self-proclaimed "Christian" leaders are more interested in political power than spreading the word of Christ.

May?? Wait until the whole story of his family comes out, and why he was born in Mexico in the first place. They'll all be slapping themselves on the forehead, "Aw, I could have had a Huntsman."

"Not Christian" isn't too bad of a slam. Cult is what I usually hear from the anti-Mormon "Christians", who find the claims of Joseph Smith and his tablets even more damning than the bigamy.

Besides some core doctrinal differences (the physical conception of Jesus, God being flesh and bone, etc) the main thing non Mormons have against Mormons is their covenant of absolute obedience to their Prophet, the head of their faith. Mormons will do everything in their power to change that topic of conversation, but facts are, that is one belief they still adhere to and many Americans are concerned about a Mormon president's allegiances in the same way they were about JFK's (and the Vatican).

Etch-A-Sketch "Christians".

I think Romney's dad was born in Mexico, but the Mittster was born in the US.

I was born a Truman, but you can call me Pat. Wave

"They want to give people like me a two hundred thousand dollar tax cut that’s paid for by asking thirty three seniors to each pay six thousand dollars more in health costs? That’s not right, and it’s not going to happen as long as I’m President." Barack Obama

Oops, yes that's right. Mitt's grandfather moved to the US, I think due to war in Mexico. The grandfather's grandparents, I think it was, originally moved to Mexico to continue practiing polygamy and was some kind of major Mormon apostle.

I do not think this if going to go over well, no matter how the GOP Christians pretend it doesn't matter.
