National Review fires John Derbyshire over race article
Columnist is sacked after writing article urging white and Asian parents to tell their children to avoid black people

The National Review has fired its contributing editor John Derbyshire after he wrote an article for a website urging white and Asian parents to tell their children to avoid black people.

The National Review's editor, Rich Lowry, called the article "nasty and indefensible" while defending Derbyshire himself as "deeply literate, funny and incisive".

He wrote in a statement about the article on the National Review website: "We never would have published it, but the main reason that people noticed it is that it is by a National Review writer. Derb is effectively using our name to get more oxygen for views with which we'd never associate ourselves otherwise. So there has to be a parting of the ways."

Good for National Review. I read that article and it was sickening. More of the ones pushing racism ought to be fired.

Sadly, it was only the utterly blatant nature of this article that got this bigot shit-canned. Dog whistles and other underhanded racism rarely gets the perpetrator punished.

Talk about synchronicity (if that's the right word).

I am UP way too early (2:00 AM local) so what better use of my time than to watch UP on my DVR from Saturday morning.

Just as I was listening to their discussion about race and this article in particular I find this thread.

They had a really good discussion about not only race but the false equivalency seen so often in the media. Try as he might Josh Barro (Forbes.com) couldn't really come up with a cogent argument to refute the idea that the political battle has been largely an asymmetric war with huge megaphones on one side willing to use scorched earth tactics while the other side had to fight back with letters to the editor to papers that nobody reads anymore.

Something I don't understand there - if the National Review published it, why are they firing someone for writing it? They should fire themselves, too.

The article was written and published on a place called Taki's Magazine. If you click on his name at the top of the article it says "John Derbyshire is a contributing editor to National Review." http://takimag.com/contributor/JohnDerbyshire/76 Evidently National Review didn't like being named anywhere near the article and fired him. Good job on their part.
