The Gulf spill of 2010 is not a thing of the past
It is still having a lasting effect on the ecology of the Gulf of Mexico. The effect is not small, and it is not over with by any stretch of the imagination:

On some boards (not this one), I was bashed for being too pessimistic about the long-term effects of that spill. In this case, I only wish the ones bashing me had been right. They weren't.

With the size of the BP oil gusher how could it not affect marine life for years to come? I read yesterday that tar balls are still washing up too. And yet, the hardest hit like Lousiana are screaming for more rigs in the Gulf. What a mess.

ps....anything new on the North Sea gas leak? I haven't seen a thing on it.

I doubt the owners of the gas rig are eager to get the same kind of publicity that cost BP a few hundred million and their CEO his job. But it is still spewing methane at a huge rate, as far as I know. The news of the "heroic and competent engineers" who have capped the well haven't been published as far as I know, and that's the first thing they would be crowing about if it had been accomplished. In this case, it's a near certainty that no news is bad news.
