Gingrich to lay off one third of his campaign staff
Quote:By MIKE ALLEN and GINGER GIBSON | 3/27/12 9:39 PM EDT Updated: 3/28/12 8:39 AM EDT

Newt Gingrich is cutting back his campaign schedule, will lay off about a third of his cash-strapped campaign’s full-time staff, and has replaced his manager as part of what aides are calling a “big-choice convention” strategy, communications director Joe DeSantis told POLITICO.

Michael Krull, a former advance man and a college friend of Callista Gingrich’s who took over the campaign after a staff exodus in June, was replaced last weekend by Vince Haley, who has worked for Gingrich for nine years and currently is deputy campaign manager and policy director.

“We’re focusing exclusively on what it’ll take to win what we’re going to be calling a big-choice convention in August,” DeSantis said in a phone interview Tuesday night.

I just don't see Gingrich dropping out. He'll keep a toe in the race somehow, and try to disrupt the convention.
He's enjoying the attention too much. If he left the race, he knows he'll never have another chance.

I could see Romney striking a deal with Newt to keep his campaign on life support (all under the table, of course) in exchange for focusing attacks on Santorum and off of himself.

Gingrich may not announce that it's over, and he'll remain on the ballot for the rest of the primaries, but I think it's beginning to dawn on him that he won't even be able to challenge Santorum for second place.

The only remaining state he has any shot at is North Carolina, but with no money, even that chance is remote.

I understand he has been reduced to social media and calling delegates. He's not even campaigning in primaries. Geez, I could run a campaign like that.

I'm shocked! I thought that they'd quit, seeing that Newt has zero chance of winning.
