The Florida police department handling the fatal shooting of an unarmed black teen by a self-appointed neighborhood watch leader admitted to ABC News tonight that investigators missed a possible racist remark by the shooter as he spoke to police dispatchers shortly the killing.

The admission comes a day after the Justice Department announced that it has launched an investigation of the slaying of Trayvon Martin by George Zimmerman last month as a possible hate crime.

On a tape of one of Zimmerman's 911 calls the night of the shooting, he is heard saying under his breath what sounds like "f**ing coons." Seconds later he confronted Martin and after a brief scuffle shot him dead.

This shows how lax the FL PD was with Zimmerman. And how they hid what they didn't want released. Now they will be forced to fess up.

But off of the top of my head - it sounds like this watchman was waiting for a chance to kill some black person. The victim wasn't doing anything but walking down the street.

The man was a cop wannabe, the neighborhood snoop who called 911 nearly 50 times in the past turning in people who didn't look right for whatever reason. It reads like a cheap novel....and he got to kill a boy and walk away.

Disgusting, and it tells me that Zimmerman IS a racist, and like treestar said, I think he was looking for an excuse to shoot a black person.

I'm listening to Lawrence too and it is very clear the cops are involved in a huge cover up. That bastard went hunting and poor Treyvon was his victim. So very sad.

Yes, this smells of police cover-up. I heard about this earlier when Joe Madison brought it up on Rev Al's show, so I went to his website and listened to it and I could clearly hear the words "fucking coons." I was rather taken aback because I had listened to all the 911 tapes last Friday when they were first released and didn't catch that.

So I went to the Orlando Sentinel's site and the Miami Herald's site and listened again, and now that I know what I was listening for and when to listen, I could hear those words.

But then tonight on Lawrence O'Donnell's show after he played that portion of the tape and then took a break, the woman who was his guest, I didn't catch her name, who I believe is a civil rights attorney, said she had to make a correction in that during the break she was informed by her office that the tapes supplied to her by the police department did NOT contain that portion of the 911 call with the racial slur.

Now that's interesting! Because the 911 tapes on the Sentinel and the Herald do contain the words in question, so why would the 911 tapes supplied by the police to the civil rights attorney be different? If this is true, this is going to be a major scandal, not that it isn't already!

and why is the shooter just walking around free? If a cop shoots someone in the line of duty, he or she is put on leave while it's investigated. And the police know where that officer is at all times.
But shoot a black kid and claim you are some 'neighborhood watch' dude, oh, fine, you were just being a good citizen.

The hell with that crap. This guy needs to be locked up until the investigation is done. At this point, I would say for his OWN safety.

Zimmerman was hunting the young black man and murdered him in cold blood. i think the country has had enough of this Wild West mentality.

Heads better roll on this one. This law means open season vigilantism! We have self defense laws here in California but it doesn't allow you to hunt someone down which is what happened here!
