Mars Announces New Calorie Limits for Candy Bars
Thursday, Feb 16, 2012 | Updated 8:26 AM EST

King-sized Snickers bars may soon be a thing of the past.

Mars announced it will stop selling chocolate products with more than 250 calories in them by the end of next year.

<..> The change means the king-size Snickers bar - which packs 540 calories - could be gone by 2014.

That's ok, the king-sized ones are huge. I love those Snickers with almonds bars....remind me of the old Mars Bars.

The only time I buy candy bars is at Halloween. I like to get the bite-size bars so I can enjoy any leftovers. yummm....
I didn't even know that huge candy bars were being made. 540 calories is a lot of sugar to eat in one sitting.

America...
It's like I don't even know who you are anymore.

Our forefathers fought and died for our right to snack our way to type 2 diabetes conveniently.

That is awesome. It would be even better if they could add a little fiber and make sure there's no high fructose corn syrup in anything. And, maybe experiment with some agave and stevia for sweeteners. No matter what they do, it's a step in the right direction.

A positive step
But I'm a food facist and would like to see a lot of this garbage taken off the shelves all together. Throw in pop and the sugary juices as well.

Used as a very occasional treat, sugar can have a place in an otherwise healthy diet. It's just that most folks get addicted to this junk and eat it all the time in place of real food like fruits and vegetables. And most people don't take the time to learn how to cook real food. It's easier to open a box and add water.

Another problem is that healthful eating is not taught. A friend of mine who desperately needs to lose weight to control her diabetes thought the 100 calorie snack packs of cookies and crackers were a good way to go to control weight. She had no clue about the complete lack of anything nutritious in those packs, not to mention all the sugar and fat.

540 calories is more than a McDonald's Quarter Pounder /w cheese (510 cal) and a lot for a candy bar. That's good that's it's going away. Also, like said above, eating healthy must be taught and making those choices available. (well done, Mrs. Obama! Thumbsup )
